Morning Commute Haiku...
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:01:46 PM »
Obviously, tongue-in-cheek, but here goes:

Prius blocks fast lane.
NASCAR number on hatchback?
Drive like you stole it!

Minivan swerving.
Mom flailing at kids in back.
She's on the phone, too.

"Bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round...

a good way to occupy your mind while stuck in traffic.

maybe you should start keeping a tape recorder so you can get these deep thoughts captured forever.

What no makeup applying soccer mom, no newspaper reading trying to look important person.
Look on the plus side you don't live in the state that has to most transient drivers in the nation, most that don't know how to drive.

Police: Indiana Mom Attempts to Outrun Freight Train, Kills 2 Children

An Indiana mom attempted to outrun a freight train at an intersection but didn't see a train approaching from the other direction and crashed, killing two of her children, police said.

Authorities released a video showing Edie Bolanos attempting to outrun an eastbound train in her minivan by cutting through a parking lot and making a quick turn.

"It seemed that she [Edie Bolanos] was so intent on beating the eastbound train, she never even saw the westbound train that hit her," Hammond Police Sgt. Michael Jorden said.

Two of Bolanos' children, Crystal, 11, and Anahi, 8, were ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene. The other two children in the van were in stable condition.

Click here to read the report from the Northwest Indiana Times.

"My heart goes out to the family," said Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller. "My only hope with the release of this [video] is that other people will learn a lesson, and maybe we can avoid another tragedy in the future."

The 65-second video from the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District shows Edie Bolanos turning her minivan into a parking lot, racing east and making a quick turn to get across the tracks.

Click here to watch the video.

The van does not appear to slow down as it approaches the tracks, according to the video. The westbound train struck the driver's side, pushing it into the eastbound train at 9:49 a.m. Saturday.

Bolanos remained in critical condition Thursday at Loyola University Medical Center in Chica

Oh, fear not.

Those were just observations from this morning's Madison Beltline commute.  I'm sure I'll see more stuff, same as I always do...

I think of this every time some one says anything about Haiku's, I think of this:

"Worker bees can leave
even drones can fly away
the queen is their slave"

There are a lot of train tracks in Indiana. And it is very irritating waiting for them multiple times a day.

Guess it depends how lucky you feel on a given day, then, doesn't it? Gamble that you can beat the train, or not.

The laws of physics somewhat favor the train, IMHO.

we had a guy in virginia got hit by trains, 2 of them , at the same crossing , 7 years apart.  he survived his first game of chicken and being a slow learner did it again.  i wonder how many times he got away with it. he will not be attempting the hat trick  he was not that lucky
It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

I won't call myself a C-SPAN junkie, as I can stop at any time.  Anyways, onto the promised threatened C-SPAN haiku:

Congress, over the web.
BookTV favored program.
Others mock,  I care not.

And a bonus memorial Booknotes haiku:

Booknotes no more.  All is Woe!

Hammond, Indiana (where the minivan collision transpired and where The Christmas Story is based) has railroad tracks through the center of the city.

Lafayette used to be similar until Railroad Relocation.

One would think if you lived in an area with many trains that one would appreciate the danger of trains.  Apparently not--I blame MTV.

I cannot think of Haiku without thinking of one a friend of mine in high school wrote.  Backstory:  There was a...large...teacher at that school who wore clothes that we all thought looked like floor coverings.

Rugs are getting tight.
Teacher needs a new wardrobe.

Seek out wisdom in books, rare manuscripts, and cryptic poems if you will, but seek it also in simple stones and fragile herbs and in the cries of wild birds. Listen to the song of the wind and the roar of water if you would discover magic, for it is here that the old secrets are still preserved.

Easy fix for that.  It's like learning the secret to telling twins apart - find the distinctive mark or behavior.  In this case, merely say "Abby" and see which one cringes and protects the jewels.

stay safe.

If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

They keep making this eternal vigilance thing harder and harder.  Protecting the 2nd amendment is like playing PACMAN - there's no pause button so you can go to the bathroom.
