The new Harry Potter film
« on: July 16, 2011, 09:11:42 AM »
Well, it is a fitting end to the series.  I, and most of the theater, choked up when Professor Snape dies and his memories were replayed in the Pensieve.

Saw it this Wednesday. Excellent movie, although there's a couple of changes from the book, IIRC. I agree regarding Snape's memories.

I've read all the books, so know the outcome.

Might want to give a spoiler alert for those who have not.

Rickman has died in a lot of movies now, hasn't he?

This ain't Dodge City, and you ain't Bill Hickock.

I'll get to it eventually.

I finally caught up with all the movies in case I actually go see this one at the theater.

But I maintain my opinion that its not what I would have wanted. The actors and the visual effects are stunning and worth watching on its own, but I think a better format for the stories would have been a mini series on a channel like HBO or something.

The movies (especially the early ones) cut so much material and the result in the movies was jumpy.
A mini series (say episode per chapter) would have allowed for much more to be preserved and even some additions.

Miniseries and well planned TV seasons are the best way to tell a good story.

Miniseries example: Band of Brothers could not be told with impact in a movie platform.

Well planned TV series: Babylon 5 was dropping foreshadows in the first season that weren't used until later seasons.

Movies are cheaper and have quicker ROI. But with a Netflix business model; I look forward to a lot more TV series and miniseries that are produced at the same quality as current blockbusters. But with a better format for story telling.

Gotta agree with the series format. I prefer series vs. a movie simply because I find I am better able to pay attention to and absorb an hour long show vs. 2-3 hour long movies...I just lose my attention span and desire to watch something past the 1 hour mark...hence I don't do TV show marathons, either.

I didn't read the books*, so Ladypine had to explain things to me otherwise I had not a clue what was going on.

Apparently they dramatized selected scenes and just skipped over everything between.

* I tried, but I just couldn't get into the story.  I like good fantasy (fencing, chases, escapes, true love, etc...) but the flying motorcycle just turned me off.

The series as a whole is ok, but in the last book between Hermione's Bag of Deus Ex Machina and the "Oh hey, HP is akshully Jesus" ending I have no real urge to either reread the books or watch the last few movies.

Hermoinie screams "Harry!" and "Ron!" about every other scene Emma Watson is in.

That should fill in a good 25% of the dialogue for you.
I promise not to duck.

I was flipping through Hulu the other day and came across "Misfits."

It takes place in the England and several characters have thick accents.  One gal I wanted to go all Samuel L Jackson on, as in, "English!  Do you speak it mother &^%#(@?"

It was annoying, so I stopped watching after a few minutes.

Never realized Snape was the same guy. Voice is the same though now that I think about it.

I think Snape is an excellent modern interpretation of a classic hero archetype.

If you're discussing people who die well in movies, Sean Bean is the king. :)

Rickman and Bean are the best at dying in movies....but you can't leave out Brian Thompson....he dies well on movies and TV......

Rickman is one of those really great underapreciated actors. He can do it all, its just rare when the idustry gives him the work.

I wish Alan Rickman and Jeremy Irons had a show together where all they did was travel around the country doing interesting things with local color, and being sarcastic about them...  =D
