Even if there had been only low-level activity in the past, basing current actions on past results, given the estimates of opposing forces in the area, still doesn't seem to be a very good idea. It just seems to be a potential recipe for disaster if the enemy does sortie in force.

That's typical of the military in general.  Fighting the last war and all that.

Oh, Lord, please let me be as sanctimonious and self-righteous as those around me, so that I may fit in.

What is the last war? Are you saying that they use some weird idea as an excuse for taking risks?

OK, reading ONLY the story: "Reports indicate that more than 250 full time fighters reside in the city and in the surrounding villages."

It seems to me that the Marine commanders knew the potential for large-scale hostile activity.

Even if there had been only low-level activity in the past, basing current actions on past results, given the estimates of opposing forces in the area, still doesn't seem to be a very good idea. It just seems to be a potential recipe for disaster if the enemy does sortie in force.

If the area commanders have access to unlimited forces, then you can deal with theoretical problems.  If you have limited forces, you apply them proportionally to the threat.  It's not simply an issue of there being 250+ fighters in an area; it's a question of whether all 250+ have ever banded together at one time to achieve one objective.  This village was described as a source of issues for the entire region, not just the village itself.

As for fighting the last war, that comes about as a result of the post-conflict analysis that goes on.  They see what went wrong or what is the immediately/largest threat, and they work to fix that.  All too often, they do so at the expense of anticipating where the next conflict might be.  However, that's not necessarily what is at work here.  This is about allocation of resources due to scarcity, not a failure to grasp what is needed.

Alright, Marines.  For once, and just this once, I'll admit that you lot of nancy-boys sometimes man up and do the job.  Bully!   :P

I do that all the time.  They don't care.  I used to say stuff like that to a Marine I know, but he never batted an eyelash, either.

They're brain-washed, you know.

The days could get even better soon. A little bird (read Marine) told me today that they're getting ready to pay a visit to certain individuals. I can not say who/where this visit relates to, but it should be interesting. The Marine Corps hymn could give you a clue, if you know the meaning behind the words.

We're invading Mexico ??

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Uh, yeah, that's what I was saying.

Actually, I wasn't saying anything.  I was merely repeating a common criticism of the military leadership.  Personally, I think that having guys like Gen. Petraeus in charge makes that a bogus charge.

As for the Marines taking risks, they have to do that.  It's what allows them to be the world's greatest historical revisionists.  And if you don't believe me, think Fallujah and the Pacific Campaign in WWII.  To hear the Marines tell it, the Army was never there.

Nah, there aren't any pirates in Tripoli anymore. Not since the Marines paid them a visit. =D

Yes, where the Barbary PIRATES resided.

I didn't realize this would be so difficult, but you've probably figured it out now. I just hope it's not a rumor.

Well, we certainly wouldn't want to inconvenience any PIRATES, wherever those might be found.

Because that would interfere with the APS Anti-Piracy Strike Unit charter.

Tell them jarheads to stay the heck out of the APS territorial waters.
