Quality AM/FM Radio Receiver
« on: February 09, 2010, 03:14:47 PM »
Howdy:

I am looking for a portable AM/FM radio receiver that has good reception.

The last few I have bought have had universally poor reception and higher price did not guarantee better reception.

Any hints would be appreciated.

Are you trying to stay with something that will fit in your pocket or something bigger?

Now that the GE Superradio has been discontinued, I am fond of the C. Crane line of radios for good reception.

Well, both, but I would prioritize something larger so that I have more options when working around the house.

I think the antenna style and location is as important as the receiver.

Have you tried a different wire antenna or a different location?

My parents tried one of the c crane radios and were disappointed.  They are in a bad area for AM reception though.

You still might find a new GE Superadio on the innerwebz.  You can find a used one, fersure.
Look for alternate labeling of RCA RP7887 Superadio III - Same thing as the GE, different box.
New they were about 40 bones

I had a Grundig YB that had a good AM front end, but it was pricey at about 100 dollars.

Check this out, too.  No experience, but worth some research:

Long range AM listening is called Mediumwave DX.  Hobbyists look for extreme sensitivity, high definition and fine tuning in a radio, along with input jacks for external antennas.  The Superradio fits the bill.

The price has gone up in the last 4 years, but a Superadio can sit on a shelf and fill the garage with the ballgame or king biscuit flower hour.
I love them.

Get an old R-390 if you are a hobbiest.  A big old military .3 to 30 Mhz receiver.  Tube type, heavy, guaranteed not to fit in your pocket, not meant to be portable.   Tight front end, good sensitivity and selectivity.
I once used one on an LST in the SW Pacific near Australia to listen to my favorite AM station out of Portland, OR.
Pricey and hard to find, tho...
