In praise of apples
« on: October 19, 2010, 12:24:29 AM »
I was just eating a fresh Braeburn apple off of my neighbors' tree, and I thought how lucky I am to be in an area where apples are so plentiful. Apples are my favorite fruit, and right now, I can go down to my local grocery and select from about 10 types of apples: Red Delicious, Braeburn, Jonagold, Fuji, Cameo, Pink Lady, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala, and Honeycrisp.  Between my neighbor and I, we have Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Braeburn and Cameo.  Our crops were not very good this year, and I think it was due to poor pollination from a lack of bees.

But you can never go wrong by feeding me an apple dessert.

One more thing to love about this time of year - the abundance of delicious delicious apples.  Nom nom nom.

I prefer Granny Smiths most times, but will also get Pink Lady and occasionally Honeycrisp when they're good.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are going out to the apple orchard with my parents and grandparents and picking fresh apples . . . and even as an adult, taking my mother out to a local orchard back in MN to pick a peck or two was a nice outing she enjoyed.

Sadly, that's not an option in central Texas . . . and once you've tasted an apple picked fresh off the tree, you're ALWAYS going to be disappointed by what you can get in the grocery store.

And home made apple pie . . . mmmmm. (Especially if the baker is smart enough to use honey rather than sugar . . . )

I think it was due to poor pollination from a lack of bees.

I just scored a location next year to place some hives, a small apple orchard. Should be a win win for both of us.

I recently "discovered" Arkansas Black apples.  They're very crisp, with a thick skin, and have a tart, but not too tart taste.  Those and Honeycrisp apples are my favorites.

I got nuthin'.  Best of poor selection is Granny Smith, but those are by far the best.  Red Delicious, Golden Delicious... bleah.  By the time they're in the store, they're horrible.

What happened to Winesap and MacIntosh apples?

I'd forgotten about those - like 'em both, though not as much as Granny Smiths.  My grandma and her neighbor both used to have MacIntosh apple trees in their backyards (up in upstate NY) when I was a kid.  Haven't checked in a while, but I know Grandma's got taken out by a massive windstorm several years ago, and I think Betty's (the neighbor) was as well.

Chris, I've never heard of Arkansas Black - must be a regional thing?  I've lived in NY, TX, briefly in OR, and in VA, and have never seen 'em.  They sound good, though.
