Wintry mix
« on: November 30, 2006, 11:57:07 AM »
What is with this phrase?  The local weatherpersons started using it several years ago and now it's even on the National Weather Service webpage.  First of all, where's the "e"?  Secondly, when did this go from a cutesy little slang term to something my weatherman can say with a straight face?  He sounds like he's selling candy.  Wintry mix, my eye.

Grumble, grumble.

Hah! An appropos phrase for what's happened in OKC for the past 24 hours. We started with rain and temps of 33. Then got a mix of rain and sleet. Then a mix of rain and snow then more sleet and snow and finally about 10AM this morning pure snow.

Now that's a MIX! And all of it wintEry...

Well, the e isn't there because the word wintry has never had an e, and dates back over a thousand years.

As for the phrase, my only guess is that it lets the station get in half a second more of ad time than saying "a mix of sleet, rain, and snow."

I opened this thread actually expected it to be some sort of food discussion about some sort of winter snack mix like Chex mix.  grin

Thank you, that's what I'm talking about.

I've never heard of "wintry" but I had seldom seen "darkling" until I read Tolkien.

Its something they say where there really isn't a winter....here it gets described exactly as it is....rain/sleet/snow/whatver mixed....but hey, I've seen snow pellets, ice pellets, sleet, slush, freezing rain, freezing mist, and a host of other odd weather patterns here in Ewetah.
