Just whatever you do, don't sneeze...  :D

Sorry, couldn't help it.   Hopefully you get feeling better...   And while I understand the issues with the pain pills, *do* take them as prescribed, pain actually tends to slow down the healing process somewhat...   If you are experiencing too much nausea, ask your doc for a prescription for Zofran.   It's a seriously good anti-nausea (technically an anti-emetic) medication.

I will say one thing though... I have had several kidney stones, and my docs seem to think that vicodin, percocet, and straight oxycodone tablets are candy....  Damn near got hooked on the [censored] things...   But they *do* help when prescribed (and taken) correctly.   DO NOT take more than the prescribed dosage, especially of the vicodin/percocet variety, since they are also acetominophen.   You don't want to try to get a new liver....   :)

We got zofran. I told the doc that I didn't like opiates and he gave me that. Said "trust me, take the pain meds"

I started a thread a while ago about pain killers and there non effectiveness on me. Specifically the opiate based ones.
Has anyone here ever tried tramadol(sp)?
I might ask the doc next time I need pin killers.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

I'm done with em. Either I'll use regular Tylenol or I'll crush and snort the percocet ... I can't handle the nausea and the anti nausea meds don't seem to be helping

dunno if the doc told you, but you should take the zofran at least 15 mins before the opiates...

Yeah, Zofran takes a little while to kick in....  Even the IV stuff we used to carry (now we use a dissolving tablet) took something like 10 minutes to take full effect...   When other IV drugs are pretty much 5-10 seconds to kick in.  Oral peak plasma concentration is 2 hours or so....   Usually onset of action is 45-60 mins....  Oral opiates usually take 30 mins to start kicking in...   So if you take it 15 mins prior, it's starting to kick in at about the same time as the opiates.

Toradol is good stuff.

Essentially the 500lb gorilla of the NSAID family. Not very happy happy for the liver, so it's generally limited to an Rx of a week in length, but it works great.

I promise not to duck.

I've had very good luck with tramadol in the past.

Can make you mildly fuzzy until used to it, but not extremely so.

Most prescription pain killers either make me sick or make me itch so bad I'd rather deal with the pain instead. When I was having back issues, the doc switched me to Tramadol and it worked, without the icky side effects. I don't know that it would be effective against extreme pain (like what they might give morphine for, or post-op recovery) but for "regular" pain it was very effective.
I don't recall the fuzziness Lup mentioned, but it's been a few years.

The opiates don't make me fuzzy, loopy, drowsy, they just do absolutely nothing. Even when taken to the maximum dose prescribed for other stuff. About 4 times what my doctor prescribed.
When I hurt my back last time the only thing that worked was the muscle relaxers and the anti inflammatory. The muscle relaxers have no side effects either. They just stopped the spasms.

Good info that is often left out of discharge instructions. I always give zofran, or another anti-emetic, IV before I give the IV pain meds. I haven't had anyone actually die from pain on me, but have had plenty get much more miserable by not waiting for the zofran to kick in before the opiates.

well, i'm stuffed up (swelling) but feelin pretty good. Worked yesterday and today. Minimal bleeding, minimal pain. Toward the end of the day yesterday the pain caught up with me but regular tylenol was sufficient.

Another bottle of painkillers to add to the emergency kit i guess. ROFL
