CO alarm & hive advice
« on: January 26, 2016, 01:33:14 PM »
It's started going off intermittently.  No, not batteries needing replacement chirping.

This is a rental, so I need to go through the rental agent - which I have done.

Turned the thermostat down to "keep things from freezing" and have cracked the door to get more fresh air.  Seems to satisfy the alarm for now.

For what it's  worth I've got an oxygen concentrator that hooks up to my CPAP.  I can run a hose with a nasal anula from it to my recliner/computer.

So, hive, should I be calling the fire department as well?

stay safe.

Mine went chirpy last year.  It was malfunctioning.

Are there any actual CO sources in your dwelling/building?  Gas-fired appliances, furnaces or the like?

This.

Also, the CO monitor we have in our basement near the gas furnace and water heater.  It started going off when sunlight shined into that room.  It even did this when it was outside away from any sources of combustion.  I replaced it and the new one has not beeped once.

I would call the department just to come check things out.

Same here.  Mine was a wall plug unit we bought when we moved into the house.  On the back of the unit it said that when it did the periodic quick chirp thing it was malfunctioning and needed replacement.

Or call the gas company.  They can figure out which appliance is malfunctioning.   BTW, how old are your furnace and water heater?

Forced air oil heat.  Unit is at least 15 years old - that's how long I've been here.

The furnace maintenance folks were just here with all sorts of probes & gauges - they got nothing but based on the age of the unit will be recommending replacement.  Should happen tomorrow afternoon.  (I'll be out of the place in the AM - might get the doc to get my blood tested for CO level.)

stay safe.

Get another CO detector, they are only good for 5-7 years.

I am surprised everyone missed the obvious. He has an O2 concentrator. Just put the end (outlet) of the tubing by the CO2 detector. That should take care of the chirping.  ;)

The unit needs to be inspected IMMEDIATELY.

There could be a crack or small hole forming in the heat exchanger that is allowing CO to creep into the indoor atmosphere.

This happened to a friend's Grandmother some years ago.

OK, I see that I responded before I read the entire message.

Did they do a full visual inspection of the heat exchanger, or did they just use their probes and gauges? Sometimes, oddly enough, the ONLY way to diagnose an issue such as this is with a full visual inspection of the head exchanger.

If they replaced the entire unit, as VA alluded to, then I think it has been taken care of... ;)
