Title: Central Oklahoma in High Pucker today
Post by: Brad Johnson on May 06, 2024, 03:09:53 PM
Looking at the Storm Prediction Center Convective Outlook for today. Central Oklahoma is in deep doodoo. High convective probability beginning just south of OKC and running north into southern Kansas.

Enhanced probability areas are everyday. Moderate areas less so, but not uncommon. High is a moniker the SPC doesn't use casually, reserving it for times when Mother Nature is flashing "YOU'RE SCREWED!" in giant neon letters.

Nothing on radar yet. I expect there are enough chasers pooling in southwestern OK to create their own gravity well.

When I lived in Lawton this was always a time of year you always watched the weather. Back in the 60s when the sirens went off we would hop on our bicycles and go to the highest hill to look for the tornado. when I went back in the late 90s it was a little more serious. We were there in May 99 when a series of tornadoes started down by Lawton and then headed up the highway to Moore/Norman/OKC. The little town of Bridge Creek was reduced to house foundations along with tons of other damage to many towns and farms.

Sounds like you need a concrete roof.

He just said Waffle Houses are closing in OK. That's not a good sign.

Mother nature wakes up grumpy in spring.

Scary in OK and northeast  of there.  I guess that's why they call it tornado alley.

Mid-CO east slope: high wind warnings the past couple of days... today, 40 mph gusts from the west, some rain and or snow possible, high 60°.

In other words:  everything.

Hoping for the best for you.

Mother nature wakes up grumpy in spring.

Suspicious Observers has been saying there were people looking into connections between more extreme weather and earthquakes connected to solar storms.  The thought is that sunspots and coronal mass ejections, even though they are deflected by the Earth's magnetic field, will inject energy into the atmosphere and/or the Earth.  I think he was relating it to our weakening magnetic field as well.   Interesting thought.

While the sun is out now (4 p.m.) in the St. Louis area, from noon to 3 has been "disturbing".  Multiple tornado and flash flood warnings, mostly 30-100 miles southwest of St. Louis, moving east at 25-50 mph.  There MAY have been a tornado in St. Genevieve, MO, (wine country) but it hasn't been confirmed yet.  Thousands out of power, hail as big as a tennis ball (TV news had pictures!), winds, etc.  Had one or two thunderclaps so close and so loud that I could feel the floor "bounce" under my feet.  Power glitched those two times for a fraction of a second each, causing me to have to reset 3 clocks and an answering machine both times.
