Time also differentiates between "Hawkmoon is at the library" and "Hawkmoon is getting down at the disco." So unless angels can be in two places at once, they still observe time.

First time I've heard "Hawkmoon" and "angel" mentioned in the same breath.....kinda like stringing "fistful" and "blameless" together.....  =|

Time is a measure of change.  If there is no change, then how can you say there is time?  Time exists independent of man, because well, things change!  The universe expands, planets orbit stars, atoms jiggle.  NONE of this can be explored without the use of time.  Time is as critical to an understanding of physics as the spatial coordinate systems we have constructed.  Man need not observe this change for time to exist.

I believe we are fussing over the definition of "time"? I'm defining "time" as that method by which we observe/record change. And that method was created by man. That method is imperfect and therefore cannot be used in attempting to calculate the answer(s) to the questions of the universe.

But I see what you guys are getting at. It's almost the old tree in the forest argument? I'm saying time wouldn't exist if man wasn't here to observe and record it. Some (or all?) of you disagree. Cool!  [popcorn]

This is no time to be taking polls about time.  I don't have the time.

The Aussie Aborigines call their concept of precreation/creation the "Dreamtime".

The European settlers had a saying, "I got no time for the Dreamtime!"

Sort of like Jung talking about the self and the shadow, I suppose.

The thing about angels and the ability to be in multiple places at the same "time" is that there is no way (of which I am aware) to prove that they can ... or that they can't. Since angels are immortal and don't have physical bodies, I see no logical reason to postulate that they are subject to the same space-time constraints applicable to us humans. So, yeah, I believe angles can be in multiple places at the same "time." The key is that it's only "time" from our perspective. If you're immortal and non-physical, "time" is a meaningless construct.

That's kind of like saying that matter wouldn't exist, if man were not here to record it. I think you may be confusing the thing itself, with our perception of it.

Keep in mind there is no such thing as a device that actually measures time. We have many devices that count the swings of a pendulum, the unwinding of springs as moderated by gears, the vibrations of a quartz crystal exposed to an electrical current, or the vibration of cesium atoms.

All these devices simply measure physical events that are presumed to progress in time.

Of course, to really mess with your head, think about the jerk function.  No, not mods when they're grumpy, but rather the rate of change of accelleration.

In other words, think in terms of m/s3

Meters per second, per second, per second.

Son ofa.......  now i'm all crosseyed and have a headache.......

So....does this mean my new invention (a device that measures the swinging of a pendulum on clocks) won't have a viable market?.....  =|
