The Thousand Greatest Films
« on: September 03, 2018, 09:16:26 AM »
I thought the criteria they use for this list (updated every year) is pretty good. I've already found a bunch of older films and foreign films that I want to watch. They are a bit farther down the list, but I wouldn't have even heard of them if I hadn't seen this list. Others I'd heard of but forgotten about.

Blazing Saddles went from #829 last year to dropping off the list.

Well, any of these list will not satisfy the "But my favorite movie!" category. We all have different tastes in that regard. I liked Blazing Saddles and thought it was a fun movie, but don't care that it didn't make the "best 1000". On the other hand,  I could complain that The Big Trail is not on the list. Instead though, I'm going to use the list as a reference for films that I'd likely be interested in, but would otherwise not have heard of. :)

Quick look and I only agree that two of the top ten ought to be in the top ten.

<starts perusing the list>

...and Avatar made the list. It's dead to me now.

Singing in the Rain looks nearly appropriate.

Has Snow White AND Bambi, but no Sleeping Beauty. Again, they've got it wrong. (As a father of 3 girls, I'm INTIMATELY familiar with Disney movies and Sleeping Beauty is the best Disney cartoon.)
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

More perusal:

No Lord of the Rings.

Ten Commandments is 938?!?

These people have no taste.

Some great movies in the top 100...

Metropolis is that low?

Nice to see Blade Runner at 39.

The Shining is in the top 100? Hum... No. I don't agree with that.

Seventh Seal. Nice.

Godfather II was on last night. I watched part of it.

Man who Shot Liberty Valence is in the top 100!

Wow. The Searchers is 9th.

Number 1 isn't really a surprise. I don't agree with it, but whatever.

the folks that make up lists like this just don't think like I do.  Therefore, the list is pretty much meaningless.    =D
