First, Merkel's hold on power is slipping away. Her Parliamentary leader (Think Majority whip. They guy that rounds up all the votes to pass legislation) is booted and replaced with someone she refused to endorse. Seems that her base is unhappy with her drift toward the center/left and of course the immigrant issue is first and foremost.

The only way to form a government is a Grand Coalition with the two major (opposing parties) as every party has said they won't include the anti-immigrant/refugee Sweden Democrats. Which either party would need to form a government on their own. (I wouldn't be surprised if one of the two major parties did break down and include them, but that's just me.)
