It looks like they realized they would actually have to pay for school and do some actual work, along with actually earning a TA position. So they quit.

I'm devastated.  The thought of one of them winding up at the drive-thru window I choose is triggering all sorts of emotions.  Personally I think they are quitting as acts of microaggression.
