Anyone make a watch that looks like this?
« on: October 09, 2007, 11:49:53 AM »
old military issue watch - plain canvas strap, and I really like the classic face, uncluttered, nice design on the numbers

I thought for sure there would be someone making direct copies of the design, but I can't find them if they do.

I've found a couple of similar designs -
Citizen Eco-Drive

black face, the strap is nylon and a little fussier

Victorinox

black band, white face - leaning toward this if I don't find anything else exciting.

As much as I like the look, I will NEVER have a fabric watch band.
EVER AGAIN.

Go on ebay and look around for Russian watches. It is a big traditional industry there, especially if you like it streamlined, fully mechanical, and inexpensive. Some of the models are self-winding (by vibration), but tend to make noises when you move, so that may not be tacticoool. The downside is that eventually the mechanism will clog, so you will have to go to a watchmaker for service.

The Swiss have an entire line of these things, in different colors and formats. Ebay is your friend.

Finally, check out the hunting sites, magazines, and catalogs. They tend to have a small but pertinent selection of practical watches as well.

Ditto on the fabric wrist band. It soaks up sweat and soon stinks something awful. Same with leather.

Did you check EvilBAY? Do you own that watch or you want one like it? I have a "dollar" pocketwatch that looks very similar but made by the New Haven Clock co. Mine's a little older and has some definite art deco things going on. I did a search on them at ebay and came up with quite a few similar but not exact.

Never knew that about cloth or leather bands - does nylon have the same issue?

I've never worn a watch regularly, using my cell phone for the last seven or eight years and before that generally not caring what time it was. Now I've got an iPhone and checking the time is a big production - and makes me look like a *expletive deleted*bag.

My dad's electromagnetic field automatically kills any electrical watch he wears after a certain period of time.
Self winding sounds...interesting.

Cheap synthetic cloths smell even worse, like old sports shoes. Some turn funny colors. You might have less trouble with rubberized materials or certain polymers.

Generally, I can't see the point of a wristwatch these days, except for dress occasions. Your cell phone has a clock on it; so do computers, ovens, microwaves, programmable equipment of various sorts. If you hike, just keep the watch secured in a pocket.

I don't have a cell phone, and I'm not always at my computer. =p
Besides, I am confident in knowing my watch is right, because I set it by Microsoft's time thinger.

No cell phone here.  Lots of wristwatches, depending on where I am or what I'm doing.

I'm on my first leather band in decades. It's my dress/wear to office work watch. I prefer a rubber or stainless band on watches that get dirty/sweaty. I had a nylon band years ago, and it got nasty after a short time.

Seiko makes something similar IIRC.  Not terribly expensive either, well under $100.

I'd be lost without my watch. It means I don't have to look for my cell phone in the middle of the night or find a clock. I can just open my eyes and hit the illum button to light her up. I don't have a bedside clock- the light from one disturbs me- I prefer total darkness. The only capacity I use my cell phone clock in is to set it for my wake-up alarm.

Plus, my watch is invaluable when I am flying. I keep track of time for navigation and fuel burn purposes.

No clue.  But if he wears a watch regularly it just stops working.
It's weird.

Mbs357, my mother has the same problem.

I'd like to know more about it, myself, but have no idea of what it is called...

I've been kinda wanting this guy: http://www.nextten.com/store/watchesandclocks/StauerAutomaticWatches/BenrusWWIIWatch.aspx

Supposedly built just like the issue watches in WWII were, by a contractor that made watches for the military in WWII

I bought a cheap Timex that looks similar to those.

It has a cheap cloth strap.  I like it.  I got it for running/working out.  The watch is water proof so I can always wash the dang thing if not just take off the strap and wash it.  I have had ball caps get the same way and I just ran them through the washer.  Same for the hat bands I have in my hard hat at work.

After wasting hundreds of dollars on nice watches, I've resorted to buying the cheap $10 watches from WalMart. They last long enough for me and is a throwaway item.

I haven't worn a watch in 20years.
Of course I made it a point to design my life and lifestyle to never needing to be anywhere at any particular time.

Why would anyone want an anolog watch?  They're a waste of wristspace.

My military/aviator style analogue isn't a waste of wrist space, nor does the leather band smell of anything other than leather after 4 years of daily use.
I do not like, when with me play, and I think that you also
