I had no idea there were bison in Europe.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) announced on Friday that it is filing charges against an official in eastern Germany who ordered hunters to shoot a bison he claimed was a danger to the public. The conservationists say it was the first wild bison seen in Germany in two and a half centuries.
I am going to guess the bison had wandered into more populated areas. I guess they didn't want to attempt capture.

I had no idea there was hunting at all in Europe.
"First bison seen" or merely reported in two and a half centuries?
Oh, wait. That's probably metric centuries anyway. What's that work out to in real centuries?

I blame the far-right group AfD, Alternatives for Dinner, for this atrocity.

Lots. It's just a bit of a process to get your license. Kind of an associates degree in hunting and wildlife management in most countries that allow it.

Takes about a year, although the process is a bit accelerated for Americans stationed in Germany. Call it 6-9 months, and it is quite involved as Ben alluded to. Lots of book and classroom study, the "hands-on" has much to do with customs and the process of the hunt. It's not grab a gun and head to the woods, it's a great deal of planning and organizing a hunt.
I started the process, but the demands of the Army left little time (and lots of conflicts) with getting my license. It was easier and cheaper just to go shoot Trap and/or Skeet at the Rod and Gun Club on post then take leave to go back to the states for Deer Season.

Oh, but to get back to the dead bison. Apparently, there are large(ish) herds in Poland and other Eastern European countries. This one managed to sswim the Elbe it would appear. It's not like they shot the very last one.

So... Poland invaded Germany?
