I'm pretty sure all vacancies in the house can only be filled via special election.

Senators can be appointed by the state and the rules for filling a senate vacancy varies from state to state.

The Democrat party has been becoming more and more radicalized. Given that Cummings was entrenched for decades, he certainly kept his seat out of voter complacency.  I'm curious to see what kind of replacement rises up.

It being Maryland, I wouldn't expect a replacement to be anything more than status quo, if not further left. I was somewhat shocked to learn that he was only 68 - I would have pegged him as at least ten years older.

If memory serves, he had some kind of cardiac issue and I'm sseing reports he had a "medical procedure" earlier this week.

It is pretty much sad when anyone dies.  I have my issues with career Congressmen, but I can save it for another thread.  Honestly, I know little or nothing about Mr. Cummings.

Thank you. That's all we ask. I have lots of problems with lots of people who have died, and there's nothing wrong with talking about that stuff, but I think it's always best to wait an appropriate amount of time and to take it up in an appropriate thread.

Someone's father, brother, uncle, husband after all.

What these deaths do bring up often is issues of succession (the OP's point right off the bat), etc that are very valid political discussions.

Larry Hogan, who Thursday ordered Maryland flags lowered in honor of Cummings who died from complications of longstanding health problems, has wide latitude to decide how quickly to schedule an election for the public to elect a successor. The governor has yet to make a decision about how to proceed, his spokesman said.

As Cummings’ friends and family mourn, Hogan has 10 days to issue a proclamation stating the dates of special primary and general elections to fill the vacancy.

Under Maryland law, the special primary election shall be held on a Tuesday that is at least 65 days after the proclamation was issued and the special general election shall be held on a Tuesday that is at least 65 days after the primary.

That’s near the end of February at the earliest.
