New Absolut ad campaign advocates reconquista
« on: April 03, 2008, 01:00:01 PM »
And it used to be my cheap vodka of choice rolleyes

http://michellemalkin.com/2008/04/02/absolut-reconquista/

edit: fwiw, the parent company, which bought Absolut on Monday, also owns Glenlivet, Stoli, Jameson, Kalua, Beafeater, Malibu Rum, Chivas Regal, Mumm Champagne, and a few other brands.  Supposedly, they're trying to increase their presence in the US.  What a great way to do it. . .

well, they can have California, for all I care.  It's the rest (and the general idea) that pisses me off.

Makes me ashamed to be a Swede, even though the company was sold a day or two ago. No more Absolut for me. Hell, I usually drink rum anyway.

I switched to Titos some time ago as my vodka of choice, glad I do not drink Absolut anymore.

Great.

They take back a huge chunk of the western United States for the "Greater Mexico."

Guess what happens?

They turn it into a jobless shithole in short order and they're still flooding across the border.

as grampster mentioned, given the response they're getting here, who wants to start a pool on how long it takes for them to issue an apology?  How about how long it takes drudge/national media outlets to pick this up?

Looks like they were trying to hawk their cheapass vodka to a certain demographic (the reconquista sorts) that gets sh*tfaced drunk a lot.

So far the only news organization mentioning it is WorldNetDaily:

Company 'gives away' U.S. Southwest to Mexico
Vodka ad shows 'Absolut world' in which California, Arizona, others secede

From 3/31/08 Business Week:

Pernod Ricard, new owner of the popular vodka, must continue to market it successfully, and keep an eye on Grey Goose and Ketel One

There's an active blog about it on the LA Times website, too.

It's definitely spreading.  A google search for "absolut reconquista" turns up a handful more sites this morning than it did last night.  I saw it on arfcom and tried to do my part by posting it here

I think they pretty much just destroyed their brand in the US. At least until ADD people get distracted by the next American Idle and forget about it.

Still nothing from the main-stream press, other than a blog on the LA Times website.

If you have state liquor stores, I would suggest forwarding the ad to the head office of the liquor commission.
If they're private liquor stores, just print out the ad and give it to the owner.

See what they think of it, in terms of carrying Absolut products.

I don't think it will have any effect at all.  Most folks won't notice or they will and think "heh heh, funny" and move on.

Most liquor stores will have been given this ad in promo packets by the distributors.
