They can try to rationalize it all they want, the ad was in poor taste, and they're gonna pay for it in spades.

Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.

And an ad that had a black man in chains being auctioned off would hearken to a time which some Americans may feel was more ideal.  Would that make it acceptable?  Would that not offend people or be seen as disparaging blacks and advocating slavery?   rolleyes

well, they can have California, for all I care.  It's the rest (and the general idea) that pisses me off.

No, they can't have California, not as long as I draw breath.

Mentioned on Rhod Sharp's radio 5 live programme on the BBC last night. Fell asleep before he did the full story.

Not to overstate the obvious...

Isn't California already owned by the Mexicans?

No.

I'm visualizing a world where I never drink Absolut ever again.
Funny, I'm having the same vision smiley.

Not that I ever drank that crap anyway,

I don't really drink, but this thread has given me a mighty hankering for some Kalashnikov vodka...just because.

Local TV station (KXAN, the NBC affiliate) briefly mentioned the ads last night, and it popped up on the YAHOO.COM splash screen this morning.

So the story is getting out.

I went to the Absolut site again and, as an American, thanked them for the ads - and went on to say I owned stock in one of their competitors.  angel

Ditto . . . but so far, I haven't found it locally around Austin . . . which is strange . . . you'd think Russian vodka would be popular around a town known as "Moscow on the Colorado" . . .

I caught a ton of flack on another chat board when I brought this up a few days ago. Basically was accused of participating in a hoax, or a lot worse.

Now that I've posted the link to the LA Times article where Absolut apologizes, the crickets are chirping very loudly...

The story was on CNN this morning (4/8).  They mentioned Absolut's response that the ad was only intended for a Mexican audience (as if that made it OK).

No, they didn't apologize in any sense you'd call that. They apologized like Obama "apologized" about Wright.

This morning's Austin American Statesman carried a large column in the opinion pages which was critical of the criticism.  rolleyes

Of course, the columnist, Ruben Navarrette (out of California, of course) has written previously that the large numbers of illegal aliens we have benefit the USA, and that we should be glad to have them, so you can tell where he's coming from.

Here's a link, if you feel like your day won't be complete without a reeking dose of political correctness:

I'll remember that as I watch the local news about a couple of them who followed a lady to a local supermarket and shot out her car windows with a BB gun for daring to beep her horn at them in traffic. Tongue

Also waiting to see if the two caught driving with no ID at all at high speed through a school zone get charged with anything for driving with no ID. The rules for illegals are different.

I want to see if Absolut plans to do an ad showing France under German control....

...for German audiences only, of course.....

SKYY Vodka Supports Treaty of Guadilupe Hidalgo
« Reply #74 on: April 13, 2008, 02:06:25 AM »
A little fun at the expense of a competitor?

SKYY® Vodka, Made in the USA, Proudly Supports Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

Americas Most-Popular Domestic Vodka Decries Absolut® Vodkas Suggestion to Redraw North American Map

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo officially ended the Mexican-America War (1846-1848). With the signing of this treaty, the United States gained control of what was to become the Golden West, including California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and parts of Colorado and New Mexico. Today, SKYY® Vodka, the number-one vodka produced in the United States, spoke out against suggestions by Absolut® Vodka to disregard that treaty, as well as the joining of Texas to the Union in 1845, as depicted in Absoluts recent advertising.

Like SKYY Vodka, the residents of states like California, Texas and Arizona are exceptionally proud of the fact that they are from the United States of America, said Dave Karraker, SKYY Vodka. To imply that they might be interested in changing their mailing addresses, as our competitor seems to be suggesting in their advertising, is a bit presumptuous.

In the ad, an Absolut World is depicted where the map of North America is re-drawn with Mexico claiming much of the Western United States, negating the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, as well as the Gadsden Purchase (1853), and the independence of Texas (1836).

Dont get me started on the Gadsden Purchase, continues Karraker. I think the folks in Tucson and Yuma would be rubbed the wrong way if they hear this landmark deal was somehow nullified as suggested by Absolut, a Swedish-owned brand.

SKYY Vodka was founded in San Francisco in 1992 and continues to be produced in the United States. Premium SKYY Vodka is made from American grain carefully selected from the Midwest and 100% pure filtered water. SKYYs proprietary four-column distillation and three-step filtration process consistently ensures exceptional quality. SKYY Vodka products include luxury SKYY90® and new SKYY Infusions", a unique, all-natural infused experience made with premium SKYY Vodka and succulent real fruit.
