Miss Utah Jill Stevens will have a combat boot up on the competition next month when she dons her pageant gown in Las Vegas.

Stevens, a contestant in the 2008 Miss America pageant, is also a sergeant in the Utah National Guard's 1st Battalion, 211th Aviation Regiment.

But touting her slogan "Lock and Load," it's clear she's not your average beauty contestant. In fact, it wasn't until she was recruited for the Miss Southern Utah University pageant where she studied nursing that she even thought of entering a beauty contest.

Actually, I laughed at the first thought of that," she said in an Army Web site video. "I was like, theres no way. I wear combat boots, OK? I dont do heels. I didnt even own a pair of high heels.

She won the university crown and a second runner-up title in the 2006 Miss Utah pageant before winning her state's title this year.

Her success landed her on the cover of this month's Soldiers magazine, as well as a prominent blog on the Army's Web site, G.I. Jill, chronicling her race to the crown.

You would think that the Ukrainian Army would issue matching uniform shoes to its troops.

I'm amazed that the Ukrainians have shoes.

Just how close to the front do you think that unit is going to get?

Well, I've seen good and bad female soldiers.   One thing I've never seen a female soldier do was start any activity by saying "Hold my beer and watch this!"   Altho I did know a female warrant that started with "Wanna see something cool?", the rest I missed because I was jumping into a culvert.  Instinctional thing when it comes to warrants.

Yeah, but it they are heading toward the enemy, will any of the men go the other way?

I worked at a turnaround for our company over near Beaumont.  The local secretary was the most attractive red head I have ever seen.  When she came by to drop off mail and pick paperwork up from the plant manager, the jobs pretty much shut down as everyone watched her walk by.  I am surprised we didn't have any safety incidents.

Hey, another thing to remember is the old Soviet Union did use women in combat roles during WW2... a good many were snipers. I don't know how many were Ukrainian though.

So if they're desk jockeys, worry about 'em in combat.

If they're combat troops, worry about what they'll do to the enemy.

yea, I guess the word was those women snipers were better than men becasue they were more patient.

On a similar note, I have an old book (or 50) on the Aussie Aborigine and it contains a picture of a quite comely and quite naked Aborigine girl. I like to show it to my friends and after they start to drool a bit I make a point of letting them know not only would she eat you for lunch but she'd save the leftovers for snacks later.  cheesy
