Freedom is a heavy load, a great and strange burden for the spirit to undertake. It is not easy. It is not a gift given, but a choice made, and the choice may be a hard one. The road goes upward toward the light; but the laden traveller may never reach the end of it.  - Ursula Le Guin

That is interesting, right inside the boundary of the rez, just to the west of Cut Bank is some rez housing. The Glacier County SO used to always go out there to help out the BIA cops. Of course now, with the BIA gone and all tribal cops doing the policing, it is probably a whole different ball o' wax. Things like this do not help the Glacier County SO, or the Montana Highway Patrol keep things safe on the rez.

There's quite a few meth labs on indian reservations in northern Wisconsin. The cops and sheriffs have no authority to go in and get the brewers, and the tribal police aren't interested for some reason.

There is a large reservation, the Tulalip tribe, in Snohomish County.  For years, the tribal police have been cross-commissioned as county deputies so they have authority over non-Indians on the reservation.  The sheriff's office also provide backup and major crime investigation to the tribal police as needed.  It seems to work pretty well.

Not so much with the reservations here in Indian Territory but there is "Tribal Land" that is the jurisdiction of tribal police but most tribal law enforcement and county sheriff's deptartments work out a corss deputization deal for mutual aid and such. Seems to work out pretty well, at least for the tribal side as if they have a problem at one of the casinos they can call the county to deal with it and not involve their own people or spend their own money to do it.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

The Blackfeet rez is a cesspool of corruption and poverty. The tribal police force was disbanded at one time, things like missing money, missing 4 wheelers, and the good ole boy system. The higher up in the tribal food chain, the less you (or your family) was held accountable. The feds disbanded the tribal police and put real Bureau of Indian Affairs police there for quite a while. They got their police force back several years ago. When the feds were in charge, there was a mutual aid thing going on, I don't know if there is now. For quite a while, the Montana Highway Patrol couldn't even ticket tribal members on the rez, probably still that way. I did tons of legal blood draws for them when I worked there, but the charges were always handled in the tribal system, if there were any. I drew blood on a guy one night that had been in to have his blood drawn nine times in 5 years. Still out there driving though.

I could pretty much deal with living there, even with the death threats I got, but the wife finally said, enough, and we moved back to Spokane.

Browning, Montana makes Colorado City, AZ look like a major, modern metropolis.

On the Navajo reservation, tribal police are cross-commissioned as deputy sheriffs in multiple counties of Arizona and New Mexico (since the "big res" spans multiple counties). This allows the tribal cops to have jurisdiction over non-tribal members within the reservation. I don't know if "regular" sheriff's deputies are cross-commissioned in the tribal police, but I don't think so.

there seems to be a good deal of internal corruption/politics/crime in the local Paiute rez but as long as you drive 5 miles under the speed limit they leave non rez folks alone.
Politicians and bureaucrats are considered productive if they swarm the populace like a plague of locust, devouring all substance in their path and leaving a swath of destruction like a firestorm. The technical term is "bipartisanship".

From Hardin to the Wyoming line I stay on the interstate (except we have visited the battlefield).

No way that I am going down into Lodge Grass or Wyola, etc  ;)

I'm sure that if/when members of the eleven Virginia state-recognized tribes read this they will once again push for federal recognition.  Who knows what members of the other 14 tribes in Virginia (well, effectively 9, as 4 are extinct and the others lack official state regognition) will do.

Right now two of the tribes have reservations.  The lack of a rez is one of the big impediments to federal recognition for the other 9 tribes.  Well, that and the royal screwing they contiinue to get from the state which fears that if they get federally recognized reservations they will open casinos and stop bringing a deer to the Governor every fall.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.
