What's in a name?
« on: September 12, 2005, 05:51:37 PM »
From the Telegraph, London (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;jsessionid=CKFGORRXPFPNVQFIQMFCM54AVCBQYJVC?xml=/news/2005/09/13/names13.xml&sSheet=/news/2005/09/13/ixhome.html):

Boadicea Basher? Meet Edward Evil

(Filed: 13/09/2005)

Some may consider that Brooklyn Beckham had a raw deal on the name front from his parents but the football star's son could consider himself lucky he was not born in Cornwall.

Staff at the Cornwall record office have compiled a list of more than 1,000 unusual names found in censuses and births, deaths and marriage records going back as far as the 16th century.

The records revealed gems such as Boadicea Basher, Philadelphia Bunnyface, Faithful Cock and Elizabeth Disco.

The marriage records turned up odd pairings, including the 1636 nuptials of Nicholas Bone and Priscilla Skin; Charles Swine and Jane Ham (1711); John Mutton and Ann Veale (1791); and Richard Dinner and Mary Cook (1802).

Rene Jackaman, an archivist, started the list after discovering the name Horatio Hornblower in a census entry.

"After I came across Horatio, I also found the rest of his family in the Baptist register of Truro. He had siblings named Azubia, Constantia, Jecoliah, Jedidah, Jerusha and Erastus. As my name is rather silly, I decided to put them all together in one list.

"My all-time favourites are Abraham Thunderwolff and Freke Dorothy Fluck Lane," she said.

Other unusual names to emerge from the archives include Susan Booze, Edward Evil, Fozzitt Bonds, Truth Bullock, Charity Chilly, Gentle Fudge, Obedience Ginger and Offspring Gurney.

Heh.

I went to high school with a girl named Katcha Schut.  We all called her crotcha shoot.  I had a dentist named Dr. Doctor and of who could forget a classmate of mine in ROTC named General.  He took all kinds of grief for being Cadet General.  Of course, when he was commissioned he became Lieutenant General. Poor boy.

I had an aunt named Pansy, she married into the name Blossum.  She became Mrs. Pansy Blossum.  Poor girl.

Jedida and Jerusha are Hebrew words meaning, respectively, Dear and Inheritance.
I remember at Vanderbilt there was a fellow named Kirkland Hall, which was also the name of the administration building.

In my school there was a "Sandy Shore".

In my son's graduation ceremony, there was a "Cigarette Moscowitz".

On Jay Leno, someone sent in a newspaper campaign ad for a Republican candidate "Rich White".

The ad read "Rich White Republican for (some office)".
