I agree that there is certainly a history of using these kinds of incidents to enact bad legislation, deprive people of liberty, and otherwise engage in bad activities. That being said, I remember Oklahoma City a lot differently. Despite not being a member of a militia, Clinton used McVeigh's attendance at a militia meeting to go after militias. There were all sorts of investigations and militias were certainly under a great deal of scrutiny. Not that they ever had a great public image, but it was a heck of a lot worse after this.

I don't doubt that there a lot of people out there that hope this is some anti-gov't, right wing extremist, to confirm their biases and bigotry.

What I don't understand about the OKC bombing is, why didn't the white Americans in our govt bomb any white Americans, in retaliation for the bombing of white Americans by white Americans?

A Salon writer hoping for a priveledged white male to be the perp is very ironic. Most random bombings in the US (OKC being the one exception, though not random) have almost entirely the works of communists/anarchists(1)/eco-terrorists.
Some of these bombers or their affiliates have gone on to be professors at elite universities.

(1)- people who claim to be 'anarchists' but who are actually communists.

I would actually bet that the bomber(s) in this case are white and male, but much closer to OWS than any militia.

Does this idiot actually believe that if it is a white male American citizen who perpetrated this offense that there will be no new legislation which will impact the freedoms of the average American? Maybe I should get in touch with this writer...I've got some beach-front property in Arizona for sale, which would make a great vacation home...

Perhaps we will have to show id, fill out paperwork, and pass a federal background check to prove we aren't felons or otherwise just not safe enough prior to purchasing a pressure cooker. And will receive much guidance from our betters on a multitude of places we can't bring our evil chrome quick cookers of death.

I told my wife on the night of the bombing that the gubmint will need time to find the right kind of perp, a Timothy mcveigh type. Then they will frame the hapless guy to further an agenda. She said I shouldn't talk crazy. I just hope I'm wrong.
