First US human-to-human transmission confirmed.

WE ALL GON DIE!

We are all going to die, just a matter of when and how...

I saw on TV that many people apparently think the Corona virus is being spread this way:

Is it the Corona or the limes?

Governor Newsom Declares California A Coronavirus-Free Zone

Looks like California is going to be okay. They figured out the solution.

Does that mean they have no X-ray machines? Do they allow tritium night sights? (oh yeah, they are anti-gun so probably not)

Came across an article last night that indicates there are some odd insertions into the genome of this virus, looking like they are from the HIV virus.

The Chinese may be operating biowarfare facilities in Wuhan . . . hmmm . . . maybe something got out. [tinfoil]

My money is definitely on this being a bioengineered virus

My money is definitely on this being a bioengineered virus
 Geeesh! That would be karmic if true. A real Andromeda Strain.
Although, if they ARE bioengineering a weapon, wouldn't it be more deadly?
Perhaps this was the 1.0 version....experimental ....and the new improved version hasn't escaped.
Yet.

The Chinese will transmit Corona through the air in the little bubble wraps that come in every package I get in the mail. :old:

Not deadly enough to end the world but deadly enough to disrupt and distract an enemy and perhaps cause enough deaths to crash their economy

Not that I'm ready to say this is mil bioengineering gone awry, but yeah, you really don't need Spanish flu death numbers to start a panic. Way fewer deaths and leaking that it is in fact a Racoon City virus is all that's needed for some pretty significant panic.
-
At this point most if not all of this stuff is still in the tin-foil-hat category as far as I'm concerned
-
Funny, this morning I was tempted to remark about whether this was a war virus that got loose.
I didn't, thinking I'd be decried as being ultra-paranoid, and I come on here now and find others have thought the same thing.
So I ain't paranoid?
How about that? I must tell "certain people."

Yes, you are paranoid. And so are those other people.
China has a population of 1.4 billion. They live in densely populated cities, have poor pollution control, and eat weird stuff including bat soup. I'm surprised China doesn't get worse diseases every year.
-
Of course this is the month I'm supposed to fly twice
Was in O'Hare this week and possibly again in two weeks.
Hopefully this thing is contained. I hate the flu 😷

Which is along the lines of what I've been saying about the plain old flu being like 1000X as deadly as the beer virus, and not only do we not care, we have active national discussions on the validity (or not) of the flu shot.
But to the panic point, "govt" or natural, it doesn't take much to cause a panic. I mean, the beer virus is already causing a mild panic what with the stock market and quarantines and banned flights and whatnot.

Cough a lot. Maybe you get a free row of seats to yourself. >:D [popcorn]

Tyvek suit with hood and mask, rubber gloves and booties.
-
I'm wondering how much of those paper masks' protection is due to the fact that they discourage touching your nose and mouth after your fingers have been contaminated with outside germs.
I know they aren't worth much in terms of actual filtering, especially if you need a shave or have many wrinkles.

I'm not all that worried about the corona virus. Everything from China breaks or fails, so it won't be around long.
-
This novel strain of the coronavirus does have the potential to be just like MERS which is a another coronavirus that has a 30% mortality rate of those who get infected.
Coronavirus gets is name because of a ring of sugary proteins that surround the envelope of the viral package. Corona means crown.
-
Yes, the "normal" flu kills many more people than this beer virus. And the beer virus doesn't seem like it's going t o reach those kind of numbers.
But, how can we tell it's time to run/hide/hunker down if/when an actual killer virus does show up? How to tell when the "Aw *expletive deleted*it!" moment has arrived?
-
"But, how can we tell it's time to run/hide/hunker down if/when an actual killer virus does show up?"
When you cough and your lungs pop out of your mouth. That's a sign.

A bit of a personal decision based on your own risk tolerance and whatnot. Detection and reporting will lag actual infections. Anyway, I personally wouldn't be particularly concerned until the following conditions are met:
1) Community spread in the local region / contact tracing has broken down.
2) Disease that is significantly infections /easily spread.
3) Disease has significant mortality rate for otherwise healthy folks.
This would prompt me to limit contact with people as much as possible, become more fastidious about hand hygiene and carefully watch local developments.
My wife and I are both tied into the medical industry, so it's entirely possible that either or both of us will become involved as part of the response effort, which also increases risk, but so be it - somebody needs to help folks fighting for their lives.

Wearing oven mitts would probably be just as effective.

Interesting tangent: I don't know the accuracy, but heard it on the news this morning: China apparently manufactures 90% of our generic drugs for us. That was a surprisingly high percentage to me.
Certainly makes for some interesting tinfoil biowar speculation. There's a zombie apocalypse novel in there somewhere.

Got a news source for that?
I can see tech/active ingredients being China sourced, but not the finished product.

Did you read my post and the caveat? I said I saw it on the news, Fox Business, I believe Dr Nicole Saphire. If i had an article, I would have posted it.

Ayeiieeee! If the generics thing is true, I would definitely want to know the source of the genetics before taking them and definitely would not take one if it were made in China.
I’ve been in the chemical/pharmaceutical industry for over 20 years, and have seen very few suppliers of any chemical from China that wasn’t completely sketchy. Many that I’ve dealt with were dishonest at best, and outright fraudulent at worst.

I'm used to the pesticide chemical trade stream, because of my work, it's crazy how much technical material is sourced from China and formulated here. Especially the generic pesticides. I know in my line of work, I do draw samples of formulation from trade stream to check the purity as advertised.

There are reports that it has been confirmed the virus escaped the lab near ground zero.
The conspiracy theories are being proved true more frequently than the straight mainstream news [tinfoil]

#BREAKING: South China University of Technology biologist Xiao Botao exposed that the #COVID19 might have originated from an animal research lab 280m away from the epicentre of the outbreak. The scientists were reportedly bitten by bats used for a test on louse. H/T:

'Being bitten by or eating a bat' narrative is coming from the same government that that has been suppressing numbers of people infected or dead.
This copypasta is about as believable as someone acquiring an airborne or droplet borne contagion from a bat bite: https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/f2b07y/i_am_a_senior_chinese_military_intelligence/

I just thought it was funny as well as interesting. Not many reputable news stories giving useful information so we have to turn to other sources for entertainment. =)
There are diseases transmitted via bites or bodily fluids. It also sounds like more than one person was bitten and didn't get sick according to all that stuff.

In that light, it is amusing. This guy claims to be a part time reporter for CNN and NYT.
This is a big case of the 'Emperor's new clothes' with all of the news agencies constantly repeating the company line, without regard to all of the anecdotal information (or disinformation) leaking out of China.
