So, there's this new thing called ebay...
« on: May 01, 2009, 07:36:27 PM »
There's something on ebay I really, really want.  There is one bid so far, and the auction closes in four days.

Why not just wait until there are only ten minutes left, then sneak in with a bid?  Is there some reason I should place a bid earlier?

What do you want?

You mean what am I trying to get on ebay?  I almost fell for that.

I've been meaning to list my Atari 2600, and a book on Muj anti-Soviet tactics, and then I need to put the cat on Craig's list.

Fisty, last-moment bidding is a standard Ebay tactic. Some people even write software for this.

That book sounds cool. What's the name? Is it still in print?

I have failed in my effort to not ask about the Atari.

Does it work ok?  How many games?

It works fine.  Joysticks included.  It is actually the 2600 Junior, the smaller, black one; not the big woodgrain type.

Pitfall Harry, Mrs. PacMan, Missile Command, Centipede, Mario Brothers, I think.  There are a few more.  I will check.

Holy Cow, is there an echo in here?

And no, Fistful, you never want to broadcast your bidding intentions 4 days out from the end of the auction.

I don't even do so more than 10 seconds prior, and it's usually more like 3-4 seconds.

Hey, thanks, everybody.  I know this was a really odd question, and you guys had to dig pretty hard to find the obscure and difficult answer.   =)

Sorry for my lack of search-ahead-of-time-ness.

ebay is on Pacific time.  Can I change that in my account, or do I just have to keep adding two hours?

This may sound a little contrarian, but on some medium ticket items, when the bidding starts low, I've found that putting in my maximum bid, and letting the automatic feature take over, will occasionally result in a very pleasant surprise. People veg out when they automatically get outbid, and stop...

Just sniped a five-dollar CPU.  Bid about one minute out.  Course it's easier when no one else is bidding.

That thing that I really, really wanted is still out there, though.

OK, sniped it.   =D  Balog, it's a computer.  Much newer than anything I've got now.  And it's local, so the only shipping is a few miles worth of gas in the old Toyota.

On Ebay auctions I'm 3 for 3; waited until the last minute on each one.

Well, except for the first one, where I bid early, and then bid again, very late.  I won that one, but the seller had to return my money.  Said they had made a mistake, and didn't actually have what they had advertised.

Oh crap.  I've got this little paper due tomorrow, and it's 1.10 am.  Been trying to write something the past two nights, but I just keep thinking about that bloody computer.

Starting a little vacation on Thursday, though!  (So I can obsess over the new computer while I'm supposed to be writing a thousand words for my Constitutional History "final.")

Gewehr would be so proud of me.  I waited until five (really four) seconds out this time.  Snagged another used computer for about 35 dollars.  This one is a Compaq dc7100, with the Pentium 4 HT (3 GHz), 2GB of DDR (dual channel), and that oh-so-rare commodity in an older machine - front-mounted ports for my flash drives!   :O  They said it had no hard drive, but when I went to pick it up, I found that it had one.  A SATA hard drive.  An 80 GB hard drive, which is pretty huge for my needs.   =)

I like having two, just so I'll have a fall-back in case I mess up the primary machine.  Otherwise, I'd be afraid to try anything; so I'd never learn anything new.

This newest purchase is supposed to replace my old stand-by Dell GX240, so the wife can use it.  She likes to watch you tubes, but her previous computer was a little slow in that department.
