Does ramen cook better in a square pot than a round one?
That assumes ramen cooks up well at all. I haven't touched the stuff in years.

For you Ramen doubters, I offer this link: http://www.mattfischer.com/ramen/

ramen.. tastes like $&%*

Some of the recipes on that ramen site sound interesting.

Yeah, but... SIX FOR A DOLLAR, MAN!

Your getting ripped off.. I saw it for 8 for a buck in the store today
-
I remember when it was 2 for a buck, the 3, then 4 for a buck. Makes me wonder how they're making any money at all. They must be using lead based flour or something.
Chris
-
Hell, here in DC you can get generic store-brand Ramen for up to 15 for a buck.
Best deal I've seen for Ramen is 8 for a buck, but I don't often go looking for it.
It's nice to keep a couple around the house, though, as a quick snack or the base for a nice quick dinner.
I'll add sliced cooked chicken and some veggies to a Ramen and have a quick and filling soup.
Alton Brown also used Ramen as the base for a casserole in his one show.
-
You mean "pb" in the ingredients isn't peanut butter???
-
Ya gotta get the good Korean stuff.
-
I found baked soba ramen and rice-stick ramen in an Asian grocery...made in Japan, NOT China.
Tasty, and not bad for you. Regular ramen has the nutritional value of a jellybean.
-
Hmm, never thought about ramen from other cultures or even that "better" ramen existed. Always thought it was the asian equiv to white loaf bread and balogna.
Chris
-
Rice-stick ramen is like the stuff in a bowl of Pho. It's got almost no fat at all, but it's still carbs. Lots of places that have Vietnamese stuff will have it, sometimes in the little pour-hot-water cup things.
Soba noodle is buckwheat noodle, Japanese, it's really good for you, high in fiber, low in fat, and it's usually baked instead of fried. It's somewhat of an aquired taste, though, as it has a definite "whole wheat bread" flavor to it.
-
Soba sounds good. I'll have to check the local United Nations of grocery stores: Global Food.

10 to 12 cents each makes Ramen a pretty good deal.
Break up the dried noodles while still in pack. Cook 'em up and toss in an egg for the last minute or two and you've got a reasonably healthy and tasty meal.
-
I like to discard the flavoring packet and eat the ramen dry. Crunchy goodness...
-
I've eaten them dry before. Did that a few times while studying late at night and didn't want to boil water.
Chris
-
I'm more inclined to discard the noodles and use the flavoring packet.
They're VERY good sprinkled over buttered popcorn.
-
Not sure I'd want shrimp flavored popcorn.
Chris
-
Ugh.
I stay away from the shrimp ones. They're pretty nasty.
I like the chicken, beef, and vegetarian ones.
There were a couple of User Friendly strips that involved Ramen or the cup equivilent that were very funny.
-
Oriental is my favorite flavor.

You've never heard of......
Popcorn shrimp?

I'm trying so hard to not make an off-color joke... Really, I am.

Why would shrimp eat popcorn?

Oh just do it.

Shrimp are scavengers.
They'll eat anything.
Including Orientals.
-
Barf. Shrimp are disgusting. Not only are they scavengers, but unless they're 'deveined', your eating the intestinal tract along with the rest of it. Nasty barf barf.
-
So, shrimp scavenge.
What do catfish do? Must something eat something palatable to be suitable? Thinking of pig slop here...
Shrimp taste good and don't kill me, therefore they are food and are eaten when I have them. Catfish and pork as well.

winner winner on the funny quote of the day

I really really dislike catfish.
I don't particularly care that shrimp are scavengers. God knows I eat enough shrimp.

Same goes for all shellfish. In blue crabs that's called the "mustard," and wouldja believe, it not only looks but tastes like mustard?

Fried catfish and eggs with collard greens (with pepper vinegar) on the side, along with grits and black coffee-and-chicory. Good breakfast. :9

oh man that sounds good Maned.
Chris
-
Why don't you two go get a room or something...
-
Hey, some people just appreciate good food!
Some of my ancestors had a farm on the Mississippi delta. Must be genetic.
-
"good food"
Yeah yeah... dream on.
No wonder the south lost the civil war. They were eating crap like that...
-
They call it soul food, because it definitely ain't gratifying your physical appetite.

Here's another vote for dropping an egg in. Actually, I'm up to three eggs per packet of Ramen. Makes a rather hearty and quick meal for the price.

You mean like an egg drop soup with lots of noodles?
I'll have to give that a try.

The Japanese traditional serving of Ramen often includes a cooked fishcake and a hard-boiled and sliced or poached egg tossed in on top of the soup.
