It sounds like someone yelled something at a soccer player which made the player cry. Apparently the something which was yelled indicated that the person who yelled it may have some sort of prejudice against people who look like the player in question. The yeller is to be punished.
On two occasions, I have been asked [by members of Parliament], "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able to rightly apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

Old news in Europe.  It was a few years ago when a fashion designer was arrested for making slurs in a bar in France.

The article was pretty short on details. What scares me the most though, are some of the comments. if you read through them, you see supporters of the arrest justifying it in the same way someone would justify an arrest for a carjacking or something. Enough people have accepted it to the point that, "It's a law, therefore it has to be a good thing."

It's the same road our legislators want to lead us down. Get restrictions and bans and prohibitions in place in the legal code, and people eventually become accustomed to them, no longer realizing that they were just a little bit more free in a hazy past that they sort of remember. Stove, pot, water, frog. Slowly apply heat.

And it's mostly the Republicans who get all "The law is the law!" and support stupid stuff once it gets passed.  As long as the law is abusing someone else's rights, it's a good thing -- even a right that I hold dear for myself.

Certainly, there are some forms of racism worse than hatred legislation. An official program of genocide or enslavement, for example. Most racism short of that is preferable to laws against one's viewpoints.

Not really, at least not in this case.  Arresting the fan appeared justified - he apparently shouted "you f***ing black b**tard" at the player, he did it when his (the players) team were losing five-one, and the fan supports Liverpool (which should be an offence in itself).

fistful, that is similar to the argument that lets Lenin, Stalin, and Mao somehow off the hook or lesser demons relative to Hitler, who killed far fewer.  I don't buy it.

Racism, shmacism.  It is not the racism part of genocide that is beyond the pale, it is the mass-murdering part.  I can live next door to someone who despises me for my race, but leaves me & mine be.  OTOH, I can not abide someone who would harm me or mine, no matter how noble their intentions.
