Title: Plague or meteor ?? Nah, even better
Post by: Scout26 on May 22, 2019, 08:57:04 AM
Here you go RKL, something even better.   An Icelandic volcano spews millions, up on millions ton of ash.  That will get the job done....

The writer of that article needs to be flogged and sent back to high school writing class.

Weird. They didn't even have SUVs, lawnmowers, coal powered electrical plants, or fracking back then.

That is just a reminder that bad things could happen at any time.

"and a collapse of the global economy."

That I could see. Far ranging international trade was well established far earlier than that courtesy of the Greek, Chinese, Persian, and Roman empires.

British tin routinely ended up in Asia, Asian silks ended up in Europe, Indian spices ended up everywhere, and the trade in foodstuffs -- olive oil, fish and meat products, grain, etc. -- was monumental.

A collapse in the agricultural economy would have had devastating and far reaching effects on all types of trade.

They probably had farting cows, though.

Just sayin'

I hate where the writer starts a new paragraph for every sentence.  Maybe he gets paid by the column-inch.

I don't know.

I sort of like it.

It keeps the paragraphs short.

Matching the incredibly short attention span of most of today's modern chimpmen.

^:)

That Iceland eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in 2010 caused quite a bit of trouble.  The way I read it, the ash could screw up jet engines, therefore grounded a lot of flights, and messed up a lot of commerce.

I tend to like more white space when reading.  Two sentences per paragraph might be a little better.

Disgusting display of overt racism right there.

My professor LIED!

And to think, I would have flunked my English 101 final for a single sentence paragraph!  :old:

No, he just had a different opinion based on his preferences.

I had a professor in college who insisted that the first line of a paragraph be indented 5 spaces and who insisted that it was the ONLY correct way of starting a paragraph. He'd mark you down if your papers didn't have indented paragraphs.

It's not a matter of correctness, it's a matter of style. He was a history professor, none of the English professors insisted on it.

Buttericks Typography says that you can either indent the paragraph OR you can put space between the paragraphs to separate them.

Here's a fun discussion... https://www.grammarly.com/blog/great-indentation-debate/
