MMMmmmmm.... Bully Beef! Another favorite from scouts.

I used to like making Reubens with it. Not had it in years, though.

Never heard of nor seen the Spam Black Pepper. That actually sounds kind of good.

Spam has really branched out. There are now a BUNCH of varieties -- https://www.spam.com/varieties

I'd be willing to try the Teriyaki, Jalapeno, and the Garlic varieties, but I'm not so sure about the others. There's also a Spam spread. That could be interesting on crackers as a snack. Sort of like the old Armor Potted Meat product...

Never even heard of Tocino, which is apparently a Filipino bacon variety. I'd be willing to try that.

Tocino isn't bad, really sweet flavored. If you are ever in Austin, MN, stop by the SPAM museum and if you are there for about 3 hrs you will be able to try all the flavors of SPAM, about every 15 minutes they bring out a sample tray of one or two flavors.

/Looks up Austin, MN on a map

About the only reason I can every foresee myself near Austin, MN is if I happen to be driving to Yellowstone. As I hope to visit there within the next 10-20 years, I may actually make that a waypoint.

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Remember, I was brought up in NYC during World War II rationing and a lot of substitutions were made.  Anyone here remember mixing the coloring into "margarine" as a butter substitute?

That wasn't just during WW2. That continued well into the 1950s, IIRC, and was the only way oleomargarine was sold in those days.

Do remember a story about some Soviet soldiers calling it "2nd front" during the war since we shipped a rather quantity to them. Couldn't tell you if that's true or not.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF A HORMEL® PRODUCT IN AN UNOPENED CAN?
The product is always safe to consume as long as the seal has remained intact, unbroken and securely attached. However, the flavor and freshness of the product gradually begin to decline after three years from the manufacturing date.

MMMmmmmm.... Bully Beef! Another favorite from scouts.

I used to like making Reubens with it. Not had it in years, though.

My grandfather's second wife used to make corned beef gravy, with boiled green beans and potatoes on the side.

DAMN!

Mush up some of the boiled potatoes, put some toast on the plate, ladle the corned beef gravy over the whole thing.  Yum, yum.

My ex was Chinese. Trust me, nothing they could find in back of their fridge could compared to some of the things that appeared on the table that to this day I only know were, maybe, some kind of meat and, well, the word fungus was used often for the other stuff.

You guys know you can buy actual meat, right?  You could have real ham or real bacon if you want.  You don't have to eat near-meat.

Good for long term storage.
I keep some on my boat most of the time. I've been buying the single serve packs and they work out just about right for a quick snack/meal on the boat.

Pretty sure it has a half life, not a shelf life.

SPAM says different.  https://www.spam.com/about

Quote
While the keeper of an emergency underground bunker might have you believe SPAM® products offer eternal freshness, there is, in fact, a limit to their goodness. On the bottom of every can of SPAM® product you’ll find a "best by" date. This is the date Hormel Foods recommends using the product by. You’ll likely find yourself gobbling up the delicious meat inside the can long before that date. But if you find yourself sitting on a stock of SPAM® products during a zombie invasion, be sure to check the date before you enjoy.

Best buy dates basically mean the product is not going to be at it's best flavor wise after that date not whether or not it's actually safe. Products vary wildly on that though. From what I've read spam is considered perfectly fine to eat 5 years after the best buy date. So that could means up to 10 years or so in pantry. But there are plenty of reports of people eating spam much older than that. Other than some MRE type food what else keeps that long? But as with any canned food no matter how old check the can for swelling before opening.
Besides why the heck would you be keeping cans 10 to 20 years in the pantry anyway? Rotate them people.

Maybe I should have asked how far out the "best by" dates were.  I saw that note on their site, but it seemed a little vague.  The 3 years mentioned about sounds about right for a half-life.
