FN pistols are self-firing.
« on: January 30, 2019, 06:51:37 AM »
This is the first I've heard of this issue with these guns.

Basically, the gun might fire even though the trigger has not been pulled.  Fast forward to the 1:40 mark for the particulars.

Sorry if this is old news and has been addressed.  All this happened back in 2016 and may be fixed by now.

Did you hear in the video the presenter said they chose the pistol even though it was ranked last?

I have a few FN pistols, but they are the FNP and FNX models with a hammer.  Never heard of this either.

Looking at the video they mention two conditions where it can fire:
Condition #1 - says if you press the gun against something pushing it out of battery and pull the trigger it doesn't fire.  If you do that and hold the trigger back then pull back the pistol so it goes into battery, it will fire when it goes into battery.  I don't know what other guns do when this happens.  Never even thought of this scenario.

Condition #2 - I am not sure what they are talking about here.  Looks like a they have a bullet in the chamber and are knocking the gun around in different ways and it goes off.  It doesn't look like they are pulling the trigger.  They hit it with a hammer (on the top of the slide) and slap it around in other ways.  All they said was something about the trigger not resetting properly(?).  Wonder if this was just a broken gun.  Doesn't look normal.

I don't have an FNS to try any of this.   =)  I wouldn't use a hammer though.

Taurus, Sig and FN are calling for a ban on assault mallets. It's for the handguns.

Sounds bad and might be true, but I don't necessarily trust them. How many times has the media gotten gun stories wrong?

Yes, the gun fires during normal activity.  They say and show that a simple tap on the mag, like during a mag change, made the pistol fire.   The whole investigation started when a gun fired by itself while fully seated in a retention holster.  According to the report, there is video of that incident, but I can't find it.

That really doesn't mean that much given that there's 0 information on how the guns were tested and graded.

It could easily mean that on a points scale Gun A scored 95, Gun B scored 94, Gun C scored 93, and the FN Gun scored 92. Sure, it came in last, but in a scenario like that it means that all of those guns were VERY close.

Or it could mean something completely different.

Without knowing the testing protocols, again, it means nothing.

And we don’t know if it was one gun or many.  They only mention one.  Also, what had that gun been thru?  Was it broken somehow?

A gun shouldn’t fail that way, but I don’t have enough information to make any judgement.

Must be one of those fully automatic assault pistols we've been hearing about.
