Extreme Cold ...

... may wipe out a substantial percentage of emerald ash borer beetles in the upper Midwest.

They just aren’t designed to keep from freezing solid at these temps.

That is some good news, the little buggers.

I wish we would have had something like that here to kill off the birch borers before they killed my 3 paper birch trees.

There will be enough reservoirs of people with indoor firewood, or idiots bringing camp wood with them to get the little buggers back up to speed in no time.

Hopefully it will put a big enough dent in their population to hold them at bay until the next hard freeze gets the rest. But if it doesn't the world is suppose to bursts into flames in 12 years anyway and that should take care of any survivors.

I don’t think there are any ash trees around here that aren’t already dead or dying.
With all the snow cover and extreme cold the rabbits have moved out of the woods and creek bottom and are stripping all the bark off our shrubs and landscaping. Some type of exotic (is expensive) cedar is now a nub.

We've lost a lot of ash trees around here. I'm taking down standing dead for firewood on my place and my neighbors.
Makes good firewood and seasons fast.
I'd rather have the live trees.

Same here, all the ash trees are dead and 99%+ have been cut down.  For a while, I had 3+ years of firewood.  (I've got enough to get me through this year.)   Nothing left anymore in the parkways but stumps and some piles of grindings.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Unfortunately Illinois is a lost cause regarding most things, including surviving Ash trees.

Which is a shame because they went wild planting Ashes after Dutch Elm Disease wiped out almost all the Elm trees.

A good point for the cold weather: Chicago's cold is supposed to reduce the numbers of feral cats - the Chicago area is supposed to have 200,000.

My parents finally lost their elm tree last year. Apparently it was isolated enough to avoid the beetles and fungus.

Same here.

I'm currently short on indoor burning wood, and dead ashes are perfect.  Already dry,  and still standing so's not to just collect moisture on the ground and rot.

I'd rather have the lives ones,  they're gorgeous.

-32 here this morn, per the weather thingee on the tablet.  The wife is worried about the "outside cats" (strays she feeds).  But not enough to do more than joke about bringing them in.  I think they'll be OK.

Dozer does. He's a wuss when it gets below zero, and he'll still screw around sniffing until his paws are cold, then try and pick them up. When he tries to pick up the third paw, he falls on his ass. Fortunately I can get my coat and boots on and get out there about the same time he starts picking up his feet. I've had to pick him up and carry him back in several times since last weekend.

Coldest I was ever in was in Maine, Christmas 1989 with the ex.

Polar vortex situation hit REALLY hard that year. The one night it was 32 below zero on the front porch of the lodge we were staying in. It wasn't bad if you didn't move because it was dead calm.

A few nights before it was 12  below zero but with a steady 20-25 mph wind moving and it was absolutely unbearable just walking from the parking lot to the lodge was absolutely unbearable.

NW corner.  I think this is a record.

Late morning, temp thingee says we're up to minus 16.  And says we'll be up close to 40 on Saturday.

Larabee got loose yesterday. I was worried that he would be a real ahole and refuse to come in. I'm freezing. He's like "WHOOHOOO!! It's WONDERFUL OUT!!"

Luckily, he got tricked by the neighbor. Captured with the promise of a car ride and visit with his buddy, Smokey.
