The past 2 weeks have been getting progressively more intense as we approached a major software deliverable. It seemed that if it was a small thing (non critical) that could go wrong, it would.

Well, we've actually finished a day early. Virtually unprecedented.

Of course, at this, the second week in my 2 week pay period, I have 92 hours.

I'm taking Friday off, and probably a good chunk of tomorrow, as well.

Should we start a pool on whether some HUGE complication comes up and chains Mike to the desk again?

Maybe an over/under on when it happens?

I don't think there is any doubt that he will have to end up in chains again.  ;)

hmmmm, let's see..... A piece of custom software will be installed tomorrow on different machines, and by people who didn't design the app.

What can go wrong with that?

Brad

p.s. - turn your cell phone off. Now. And your home phone. And just for good measure, delete your e-mail account. If they can find you they'll look for the next programmer in line...

Good luck Mike. Hide in that basement you just cleared out Smiley.

Brad, don't be mean. [sarcasm] I'm sure they've thought of everything. It's not like the user base are an infinite number of monkeys in front of their machines trying to destroy the world or at least ruin Mike's chance of a long weekend is it? Wasn't it for the DoD or some similar entity? I'm sure they'd only spend your tax dollars on employing the brightest and the best after all [\sarcasm].

I hated this bit, even on the small scale I've experienced. Home phone was unplugged and mobile stuffed in the microwave.
Just so happens Satan's behind the bar pulling the late shift for a buddy...

I'm a technical writer.

Once this crap leaves the facility, it becomes a help desk/developer problem.

I'm already working on the new training manual.

"just ignore test, I see it all the time."

Wow. I didn't realize that I gave a complete and total view into the software development process where I work.

The last three documentary pieces of the puzzle are always the Software Test Plan, the Software Test Results, and the Software Test Afidavits.

The three documents together run to nearly 1,000 pages.

The software successfully compiled almost 4 months ago and has since that time been in "run it every which way from Sunday until it breaks, and then fix the bugs, and start over."

We don't deliver perfect software, but it's damned close.

"Pride goeth before a - oh, I said that already?"

The record the group of people I work with speaks for itself. The wall of awards and perfect or near perfect customer evaluations going back over 5 years speak for themselves.

This software drives systems that have to work. No ifs, ands, or buts. If it doesn't work, the customer's ability to do what it does comes to a screeching halt, which can have a seriously bad effect for the nation as a whole.

That's not pride, that's simple fact.

Was it Dizzy Dean who said "It ain't bragging if you can do it?"
