Czech hedgehog
« on: March 03, 2022, 09:12:03 PM »
Pic from Ukraine:

Certainly of recent construction, from seemingly new steel.  Mill scale, fairly clean cut ends.  Welds still aren't rusing, but there is some minor rust staining forming already.  Probably only been in the weather for a single-digit number of days.

Question: How effective are they against modern tanks?

Strikes me unless they were solidly anchored, they could readily be defeated by shelling/explosives.  Sort of like Bangalores and barbed wire.  The delaying effect might be a significant factor, however.

Sort of like Bangalores

I'm sure you meant Mangalores. Mangalores would have no problem stopping a ruskie tank.

There are TikTok videos of Ukrainians fabricating hedge hogs, improvised spike strip chains, and so forth. M

And as far as modern tanks goes physics doesn’t change just because 80 years has passed. Everything I’ve read says up to medium tanks have difficulty and maybe even heavier tanks. Certainly wheeled vehicles and so forth will too. And even if a tank can get through then they will definitely slow them down perhaps making a good ambush point. The Russians so far don’t seem too hot on tactics and experience at this point so if the Ukrainians can dig in well armed and drilled defense forces the armor will be meat and drink in urban combat.

Tanks need infantry support, especially in an urbanenvironment.  The tank will stay back a safe distance and have the infantry/engineers move the obstruction.

It slows down the progress, but doesn't really stop a tank.

Those tank traps need to be secured to the ground or each other with chains.

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens when the urban fighting truly begins.

I think one idea is if a vehicle just tries to bull through them a rear leg eventually digs in and you end up with a tank sitting on top the obstacle or with  track peeled off. Blackwater was making a portable snap together barrier of similar concept for cars.

Most effective is waiting for the engineers to come out and clear them. Hopefully you have mines and snipers. Or pre-registered mortars.

The Russians seem to be keeping all of their armor in line.  We're giving the Javelin anti-armor missiles.  If the tank traps can slow down the lead tank, an anti-armor team with Javelines can make a mess of the line.  Especially in city streets.  Hit the front and back, trap everything between.
