It's going to take more than duct tape to fix this one.

OK, make sure that acetylene tank in your truck/car is actually turned off before you park it for the night.

Quote
A contractor on his way to work about 7 a.m. stepped outside his home, pressed the button on his key fob to unlock his truck’s door.

Then, boom.

An explosion hurled parts of the truck into neighbors’ yards. The windshield landed in the backyard of a house across the street and debris littered the 300 block of Gainsborough Road.

The heating and air conditioning contractor was not injured, but the windows of his home were shattered. Flying truck parts left scars on the garage. A vehicle parked nearby was damaged.

The man had stored an acetylene bottle on the truck. Virginia Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Jack Crandell said fumes from the bottle likely escaped overnight and ignited when the key fob was pressed.

Stay safe out there, or leave a window down.  ;)

Really, it's the extremely wide range between acetylene's LEL of 2.5% and UEL of 81%.  That's a very wide range of mixtures that are explosive.

This is something I've always been rather concerned about when transporting my O/A rig to a job site.

Don't just turn it off.  Don't store it inside the cab in the first place.  At least store it somewhere properly vented.  Toolbox maybe?

This seems to happen every so often either in private vehicles or in work trucks.  Cylinder leaks creating a flammable atmosphere in the truck and boom.  Doesn't take much to ignite it.

Yea, I'd really prefer never to put potentially explosive gasses inside the vehicle. One of the many reasons why I want a pickup truck.

Yeah, but did it start?

Oh, and his insurance company probably won't pay off on this as he had improperly stored the tank in the vehicle.  (Generally they are verbotten in the passenger compartment and there are rules and regs on the proper transportation of said tanks.)  He failed to follow them.  As they could claim that by having the tank he was using the truck as a commercial vehicle.  Yes, that's a skinnier branch on which to hang their hats, but they have list all the reasons to deny the claim.

That's a nice paperweight he now owns.  I'm sure the finance company will want their money now.

Just get one of those baskets that attach to a trailer hitch.  That way the LP tank will placed just right for a rear ender.

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

I've lit off 50 gallon trashbags full of an optimum mix of C2H2 and O2. (Establish neutral flame with torch, snuff it, fill bag) Impressive. Neighbors you didn't know you had call. I've always wanted to own a derelict house just so I could reduce it with such a boom or a nice dust explosion. Way less lame than tannerite.

Acetylene and oxygen cylinders like this are supposed to be transported upright, in a secured bracket, and not in the cab or an enclosed compartment.

It's so much easier to knock the valves loose when they are stored that way.  Throw them on their side all willy-nilly and you leave it to chance.

That, and "it's easier to remember which are the empties if you put them in the rack valve-end down"  said the guy who came to do the monthly check on my O2 concentrator.  I called the company while he was fiddling in the truck looking for a drip chamber and apparently they called him because he spent at least 15 minutes flipping tanks back upright.  Wonder if he'll still be on the job next month.
