Banjo music

I know that banjo music is almost universally hated around here. I just love the sound of the soundtrack to "Public Enemies", though. It's really distinct.

Banjo music is fine, I just don't want to hear it while out enjoying riparian activities.

I'm not a big fan of the banjo by itself, but when properly played alongside other instruments, the result is quite pleasing.

Banjos are fine.  It's the banjo players who are the problem, much like accordion players. =)

I theoretically own a nice banjo. Haven't played it since I was 10. Need to get it and learn.  Ok, really, I just want to hook an amp to it and play Motorhead.

Add an accordion and a harmonica to a banjo and some bagpipes and you could get any info from a prisoner you wanted!

Leave the bagpipes out of this.

The problem is most pipers know "Amazing Grace", "Danny Boy", "Scotland the Brave" and possibly some generic reel tune.  Now imagine a line of men in skirts walking towards you, being led by some crazed man squeezing a cat to this tune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7PKSOAtUjc

stay safe.

I love banjo music.

A good friend of mine started a Bluegrass band when he was in graduate school at Penn State. They were good, and quickly started getting a lot of gigs around State College, including one opening for Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys when he played at the Bryce Jordan Center back in the early 1990s.

Matter of fact, here's an article about the band, Fresh Country Scrapple, from a 1991 Daily Collegian, and it talks about Bill Monroe.

The John mention is my friend, who is now a professor of forestry at SIU Carbondale. Vaughn Neill is another kid I grew up with, now a civil engineer in Pittsburgh.

Why is it that people playing the bagpipes are always walking?

They're trying to get away from that horrible noise.

Steve Martin has long been considered one of the top banjo players in the United States.

Steve Martin is an accomplished musician separate from his comedy and acting. A very multi-talented man.

I read on some website that Gary Larson plays, as well, but I haven't seen him.

Dad used to listen to The Black Watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CupRlspIE3Q

In a fair and just world the piper on the far left and the bass drummer would be standing in front of the bandmaster and the Sergeant Major preparing to explain to the Regimental Commanding Officer just why they have not had their St. Vitus Dance cured.  After which the Bandmaster would have his turn to explain why that was not caught before the band went out in public.

OTOH, this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIHHaEsJ1eI was done on purpose.  (And be sure to watch "the little fellow" in the cammies (no jacket) and carrying the cane - he's the big boss.)

But for pure bagpiping genius this cannot be beat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzi_qFjGz5Y  Put the pipes in the middle (drives the front half before them and the rear half tries to catch and strangle them).

stay safe.

The distorted sound of the lead banjo reninds me of Mark Knoepfler's lead in "Momey For Nothing".

Anyone remember one of our own, the renowned Skunkabilly?  He can play a pretty mean banjo as I recall.

I don't mind banjo music. It's just I am a Blues/Funk/Classic Rock drummer and we don't get many banjo players in those genres. A good friend of mine plays the banjo and we swap jokes all the time. Now bagpipes drive me up a wall! I get massive headaches from some sounds and smells and bagpipes are a sure trigger for me. My Scottish ancestors are not happy with me!
