The best exercise for mental health is........

Team sports, followed by cycling and aerobics/gym.  All three of them are fairly close, though.  I certainly feel better when riding my bicycle.

I have previously read that dancing was the best exercise for mental health. (Especially with a partner- coordination, timing, balance, etc...)

As I'm not paying for access, does that fall under "team sports" or was that not included within the study?
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I'd be interested in the breakdown of the Myers-Briggs personality types in the sample set.

I always feel mentally better after a good exercise session. However, team sports would have the opposite effect - likely because of my brain thinking back to picking teams in junior high and high school.

I despise team sports and I think I would come away more mentally stressed from some team activity where I had to put up with a bunch of jackasses. I think my best exercise for feeling "mentally high" is a really long solo day hike in the wilderness. I always come away with a smile on my face.

oooo! Hold on, I'm fairly certain I read recently that Myers-Briggs is a bunch of crap. (Note: The study didn't phrase it that way.)

I'll see if I can find that item somewhere.

Thanks. I found a lot of similar items, but none that seemed to be the one I had read, but I'm rather certain they will all have similar complaints.

The ones I've seen are generally true lead-follow partner dancing and road cycling. Line dancing and other choreographed styles fail, along with spin class, as they lack the elements of responding quickly to changes in the situation.

I guess a good bowel movement might help also.  I once had an older guy tell me "you know you are old when a really good s*** is better than sex."  I still don't agree with him, but I get his point a little more.

Grain of salt. It can be informative in a very limited degree, but it's merits are generally overblown and overstated.

You can gain some insight about yourself if you know where you fall on the test, but you have to remember that a whole lot of factors make up a person's personality and no such test is going to be spot on when it comes to defining people into neat little categories.

Interesting to see how the dynamic of APS has changed over the years. Used to be we always talked about how interesting it was that the majority of us here were INTJ (the rarest of the types) or on either side of it. :)

The Myers Briggs in many ways tells us what we already knew.

A more current test that is being used is the Big 5 Personality test.

After taking it I wasn’t sure what to make of the results and dug a little deeper. It actually gave me some insight and has helped me going forward.

You can take a legitimate version of it at Jonathan Haidt’s research site yourmorals.org

All the tests at that site are actual research tests or connected to ongoing research, they aren’t the silly click bait tests you see on social media.

For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

I hurt my foot in June and haven’t been on the bike or hiked since then.

I’m going out of my skull!

Also gained 10 pounds.

Isn't part of the Myers Briggs test is that you also pick which one you think fits you?
"so I ended up getting the above because I didn't want to make a whole production of sticking something between my knees and cranking. To me, the cranking on mine is pretty effortless, at least on the coarse setting. Maybe if someone has arthritis or something, it would be more difficult for them." - Ben

I don't think so. I had to take mine at work like 15 years ago. The psych lady had us take the test, then she "graded" them, or whatever and assigned us our type.

I've found wrestling to be great. Less of a fight obviously than "real" fighting, more of a dance. Responding to not only what your opponent is doing and what the match is supposed to end like, but also the crowd, reacting and giving them what they want. Setting up the big fall, kicking out etc.

Plus it's a heck of a workout.
