Cool ideas for a mid south vacation?
« on: June 24, 2006, 07:46:07 AM »
Keeping in mind that 'cool' is relative, and that I'm in Texas, any good ideas?

My wife (ex-wife ctually, legally speaking) and I are planning on heading up to the mid south sometime in July to meet my parents and send my daughter for a month to spend with her grandparents. We're looking for somewhere to meet up that is somewhere aproximately halfway between Dallas and southwestern Michigan, and then stay over a while to make it worth the trip

So - somewhere in the North Arkansas, west Tennesee, west Kentucky, far south Illinois, Missouri,  far south Indiana neighborhood.

Anybody with ideas?

Might want to look into Memphis.  I know a lot of people who really like visiting that city.  I've never been there, so I can't vouch for it personally.

If you're the outdoors type, the Kentucky Lake area of western KY is nice.

As LFoD mentioned, Memphis is neat too. Beale Street = Blues & BBQ, and you can always go to Graceland.

The St. Louis area is nice for a ball game, a tour of the Arch, etc.

Most of the touristy stuff in Indiana is farther up river towards Louisville and up I-65, but there is a WWII landing craft from the D-Day invasion that has been converted into a museum in Evansville which is extreme south west Indiana.
