Title: What is Creative Commons License?
Post by: Oleg Volk on April 02, 2006, 10:22:39 PM
I allowed a wikipedia author to use images of Enfield revolvers I had. However, I wanted to restrict the use to wikipedia itself. Looked at that page today, found this exchangeat http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Rama :

Photographs of http://www.olegvolk.net are useable under the Creative Commons licence

Complete correspondance

To clarify: my images are available for use on wikipedia only. Please let me know when you do use them. (Oleg Volk)

OK, so this is not a Creative Commons licence, and the images cannot be hosted on Commons. Removing them from this server. Rama 10:02, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
I thought, based on http://creativecommons.org/license/results-one?license_code=by-sa&wiki=true&lang=en-us that I can reserve some rights but give away others. Am I misunderstanding something about how Creative Commons works?

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Licensing#Acceptable_licenses

"The following restrictions must not apply to the image or other media file:

Use by Wikimedia only"

After some reading at the CC, I'm not sure if you're allowed to tailor the CC any more than the six version available.  I don't know if the extra restriction you're putting on it, i.e. licensing the work to only one licensee, is acceptable or not.  That seems to go against the Commons part of it.  At any rate, restricting it any further than Attribution or Attribution-ShareAlike removes it from Wikipedia.
