It appears unintended consequences have raised their ugly, yet inevitable head in Seattle regarding the $15/hr wage.

To be expected (in fact, I believe numerous sources predicted exactly such a result) when social agenda ignores simple economics.

The local NPR station (KUOW) also did a story this morning: http://kuow.org/post/seattles-minimum-wage-hurt-low-wage-workers-earnings-study-says

Also notice that you earn $125 less per month IF YOU STILL HAVE A JOB.
There was, additionally, a loss of 5000 low wage jobs.
Hey, but at least their hearts were in the right place, right? Who really cares if you actually make people better off?

Thread drift, but ha ha - I just watched that again this weekend for like the tenth time. :)
Also, Rick knew more about business than Seattle does. :)
-
Cue all of the apologists who will explain, in completely incomprehensible detail, just how wrong this report is and how the new law has completely eradicated poverty in Seattle while making revenues for every business go up by 500 percent.
Because the RIGHT people are finally doing socialism.
-
Wow. 63 pages to say it doesn't work.
I bet those people are earning more than $15 an hour.

They probably get paid per word. =)
-
$15 per word?
Not bad!

It appears unintended consequences have raised their ugly, yet inevitable head in Seattle regarding the $15/hr wage.
And the minimum wage isn't even $15/hr yet. Right now it is $11/hr.
-
From Ben's link
Yeah, sorry - that's just the abstract, which was at the link where I saw the headline.
-
So, the actual report then is likely a LOT bigger...
Just lovely.

Wrong. $15/hr is the living wage that will eradicate poverty.
And if that doesn't come true, then you hard-hearted skin-flints better get ready for a $20/hr minimum wage.
-
I think you may have quoted the wrong message...
"And if that doesn't come true, then you hard-hearted skin-flints better get ready for a $20/hr minimum wage."
Politicians (I'm not saying liberals, because conservatives do it, too) just LOVE to throw cash at problems.
If those cash infusions don't solve the problem, well obviously not enough cash was thrown at it!
-
Oh, you meant the number of pages? Sorry. I don't get paid for my commentary, so you get less than minimum wage quality work.
-
From Ben's link
Might be my university location, but I got the PDF if you want it.
-
If only someone could have predicted that this would happen !!!!
-
"Sorry. I don't get paid for my commentary, so you get less than minimum wage quality work."
Can we pay you to go away?

Yes. But again, the dollar figure will affect the quality of my away-going.

Enough of this incrementalism - just raise the minimum wage to $200/hr so everyone can be affluent . . . and afford to pay higher taxes to raise the parasite class needy out of poverty.
-
One of the laws of economics is that human desires are unlimited. There is no level of min wage that will be "enough" just as there is no level of welfare that will be "enough."
Hence the idea that it is the job of the gov to pay for trivial things like our cell phones, birth control etc.

Next you will suggest the government will determine what our pay will be and will handle that silly paycheck nonsense for us so neither we nor our employer will need to bother with it.

Exactly! We need a single employer system in this country for work in the same way that we need a single payer system for health care!

The ultimate in health care portability. Your health care goes with you when you change employers, because it's all the same employer. Wherever the government the people need you, they just put you there. The field, the factory, the labor camp, the gulag...
-

Nah - the ultimate goal is that government will just collect from each according to his ability, and apportion to each according to his needs.
All we need is for the right people to be in charge . . .
-
Now that's a job I would love, gulag inspector...
(some time later, Mike arrives at his new job)
WAIT! I THOUGHT IT SAID GOULASH INSPECTOR!
-
And everyone with their own business, including side businesses, gets to log their hours with the IRS and gets a tax rebate to bring their take home earnings/profits up to 15 an hour, plus time and a half for anything over 40 hours a week.
Prosperity and living wages for all!

Others have said it better than I can:
One of the most naive notions is that politicians are trying to solve the country's problems, just because they say so-- or say so loudly or inspiringly. Politicians' top priority is to solve their own problem, which is how to get elected and then re-elected. --Thomas Sowell
Results among progressives are less important than symbolism, intent and high-minded nuance. —Tom Shattuck, Boston Herald
And, paraphrasing someone I can't remember: If socialists understood economics, they wouldn't be socialists.

The stupid is spreading. Hooray.

They tried, just recently, to do the minimum wage super-lunacy in Saint Louis. Couldn't get enough votes on the board of alderman. I'm guessing it's probably the most reasonable decision that board has made in quite some time.
-
Well gee, here's a shocker:
Seattle's solution to the failed $15/hr wage is to create a new tax on high wage earners.

^^^This will likely not pass Constitutional muster with our State Supreme Court: http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/seattle-council-to-vote-today-on-income-tax-on-the-wealthy/

If it does pass muster, expect to see a rapid exodus of people and jobs.
Just ask France how it worked ...

If your plan doesn't work, obviously the solution is to find people that will say it's working.

I wonder how much they'd pay me to compliment the emperor's new clothes. I can make stuff up.
