Busy day tomorrow
« on: September 20, 2011, 07:14:51 PM »
Meeting for aspiring aviators at the school at 07:00 and then chaperone a gaggle of 7th graders at the State Fair starting at 08:00 until doomsday some time in the afternoon. I can't complain though, last year's trip was a lot of fun. =)

Turns out kiddo is just a bit too young to participate in the school-sponsored aviation program. She can start the ground school part early, though. Maybe.

Pretty cool program. Two past students graduated high school from SLC with commercial pilot's licenses!

One of thing you might want to check out is EAA's Young Eagles Program .

It's a free 10-15 minute flight in GA airplane.  IIIRC, the ages of kids they fly is 8-17.  Yes, you sign the waiver. But the kids get a pre-flight brief/walk around on how airplanes work, after the flight they get a nice certificate, a picture of them with the pilot and airplane, and a discount coupon good for free ground school.  Most of the pilots let the kids in the front seats take the controls once they get the plane level and flying straight.

It's one of the things we do for my son's birthday party.  We then go to the range/my club for Hot dogs and cake, followed by; some Archery, a bit of hand thrown trap, then spinners, balloon and cracker bustin' with .22 rifles, and finally banging steel with a 1911.  All the other parents hate me, because there is simply nothing that tops that for 10 year boys.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Sounds like one heck of a birthday celebration!

A friend of mine rented a huge gaming trailer for his son's birthday. It looked to be a 20' trailer that had several game consoles, TVs, etc that could handle about 12 kids playing at the same time. Pretty cool, I thought.

Oh it is.  Best part is that with food, ammo (a brick of .22LR, two-three boxes of 20ga target loads, 100-200 rds of .45ACP and a box of clay birds, although the boys are more then happy to go out and scrounge up unbroken birds off the trap, skeet and sporting clays fields), and gas it's about $100 tops for everything out the door.

Whereas Chucky Cheese or Laser Tag etc, will set you back $250-$400 or more without batting an eye.

Damn, scout, can I come to his Birthday parties?  =D

Field trips for this year (for the "not quite ready to fly" folks and others):

First trip - Airplane wash and cookout at Double Eagle. (Small airport west of ABQ.)
Trip to ABQ ATC tower.
Trip to EBX (or something. Where they guide the flights in regionally)
Trip to Kirtland AFB for a visit with the special operations group. The "rescue" folks.

You ATC/flight/pilot folks hold a lot of clout. They may listen to you more than I.

Here is the main school URL. Scott Glasrud is the guy ya want to speak with.

The new offshoot:

Lee Truitt (Truett?) is the aviation guy.
