Title: Academy Sports & recent events
Post by: Perd Hapley on June 17, 2016, 05:19:56 PM
There are no Academy stores around here, so it's not much of an issue for me. For you Academy shoppers, are you planning to avoid Academy, given their response to recent events?

I thought Academy Sports quit selling EBRs after Newtown, I know a few other stores did.

I have a feeling Academy Sports didn't sell a lot of those anyhow so it probably won't even be a ripple in the pond to either company.

I am sure Dick's (it not just a name, it's an attitude) won't be far behind if they even sell them now.

The Academy stores I have seen around here have a whole bunch of AR15 rifles on the shelf.  They never stopped selling them.  The one here sells bulk packs of 223, has spare mags on the shelf (at a high markup), and even has bullets and primers.

I can't see the link where I am so I will check at home.

That was Dicks that stopped after Newtown, not Academy

Will continue to buy firearms from them, as I'm sure this is only temporary.
However, their pricing is weird ,imo.
Their pricing on some Ruger pistols are great, but on most Ruger revolvers they're almost full retail.

Brick and mortar retailers who panic, take the EBR's away, then bring them back again when things calm down, lather-rinse-repeat... are one of the few gun-related businesses I won't "punish" for not being 100% ideologically Honeybadger on RKBA all the time.

The boom-bust cycle of panics, then the low-price glut that follows, especially when no major legislation comes down the pipe nationwide makes EBR's a terrible loss-leader for retail as it is. We have to realize that "regular" people, even nominally pro-RKBA ones, but that aren't tied into the "Internet of all things gun and RKBA" go there because of the rifles because it's cool, but then 9 times out of 10 walk out with some cheap nylon Chinese sleeping bag or something. Probably some clothes done up in Mossy Oak or Realtree where the margins are like 250%.

Or, if like Gander Mtn. they price the firearms way high all the time, trying to go after higher margin from uneducated buyers not tuned into "internet gun prices", their volume is going to suck, even if their margin is better.

I figure having them on the racks, on the shelves, in the display cases at "regular stores" is a STRONG if subtle pro-RKBA message. If they're so pornographically EVIL, why are they right there in this chain store? Where else in day-to-day life are the next generation going to wander around bored while Suburban/Country-Music mom looks for a "muddy girl" hoodie that she thinks hides her hips, and be in awe and lust over EBR's?

Not that I'll go to Dick's, Academy (are they even in WI?) or Walmart for firearms or ammo often, I won't put them on my "pout and yell BOYCOTT!"-list either.

Recently we broke the story that Academy had removed all modern sporting rifles from their display racks in response to the attack at the Orlando LGBT bar Pulse, as a result of Academy’s decision to remove the rifles Daniel Defense has issued the following letter to their distributes.
I guess I need to by there and see if this store did that.  That is idiotic.

Employees have been asked by Academy’s corporate office to remove rifles based on the AR-15 platform from displays, according to a sales representative at an Academy store.

The retailer will continue to sell the firearms, this person said, but is removing them from displays out of sensitivity for victims of the shooting at the Pulse gay nightclub early Sunday that left 49 dead and 53 injured.

So they are still selling the guns, they are just not putting them out on display.  My bet is they put them back in a few weeks.

I still think it is foolish.  Do they really think the majority of their customers agree with all this anti-gun nonsense?

I agree it is likely temporary.  I bought my Marlin 30-30 some years back from them.  That is the only gun I ever bought there.

A friend bought his Bushmaster (old company) from them after the Obama election.  They were one of the stores that never raise prices if you could find one in stock.

I also occurs to me that CDNN Sports did something similar after being tied to the Virginia Tech shooter some years back.

I'm kind of in the camp with AJ.

Also I figure it's publicity. I was in the gun shop today picking up an LC9s pro, and the manager got antsy when he thought he saw a camera coming in the door. He apparently had to chase weenies off a few days ago and has to do it after most of the bigger news items until things calm down.

So it may be they also want to avoid pictures of ARs hanging under a big Academy Sports sign.

I checked locally, and the "MSR" s are not to be seen.  In a turbulent period, they decided they'd rather be culturally sensitive to the hoplophobes.

Well, to HELL with them.  They will never get another dime from me.

When they put the MSR's back on the shelves, I'll consider shopping there again.....not before.

.....and I don't even care for AR's.....it's the principle.

Don't know about store displays, but there are at least three different MSR's advertised in today's Academy flyer.

I stopped by the local store and sure enough, the ARs were off the shelf.  I am with seeker.

This reads like a Wal-Mart thread, since things vary from store to store.

Is it possible they sold their stock? The AF exchange here sells them as soon as they come in. Just a thought. I have seen less stock and prices starting to creep up already. Good thing I am too old and fat to play Army anymore so I really don't desire another one.  =|   ;)

Posters on other gun boards report that multiple Academy stores pulled their MSR stock from behind the counter to the back room.

Do they do that with their Muslim employees?  Or just bar them from entering the store?

I just found out that Academy is building their first store in the region. I was pumped, at first, but then I remembered their little Zumbo act.  =|

Yeah, I have been avoiding the one here.  It difficult as they have a good selection of ammo.  There are other options.

It sucks because in general they are a very good sporting goods store.  Not walmart priced, but way better than Sports Authority or Dicks etc.

Would it make you feel better to know that boycotts don't really work?

No, Homeschool, from Think Tank, it would not.

I've not bought any gun related stuff from them in awhile. But there are still fishing needs to be met. We have one local place that's decent but it's not the best variety. So that leaves Academy and dicks.

And dicks is, well, dicks.

Meh. I just hope they don't ruin Cabela's ammo department.

FYI, the Academy near me has put the AR15 rifles back on display.  The clerk told me it was a couple weeks ago.

They were selling off some Red Army Standard AK ammo for $4.11 per 20.  I thought that was decent.

I stopped by my local Academy Sports  last week,  and they too had their AR 15s/M4s  back on the racks.

I'm not sure they actually stopped selling them, they just didn't put them out for display.

Correct.  You could ask about them and they would pull them out to look at them.  They just were not up on the display rack.  It really was a completely empty gesture.
