Explosive splicing of high-tension wires in power distribution.

I know they do explosive cladding and welding of (even dissimilar) metals, but this is a new one on me:  

Coupling connectors and conductors together in power distribution work using a surrounding sleeve of explosives (detonating cord) to crimp the ends together.

Cool.  I guess it is also easier to install a sleeve of explosive than use tools up that high to mechanically do it.

Did some dead end lugs on a 750kv line years ago. Something like 75 crimps with a 50 ton press. Dam things didn't even fit in the bed of a full size pick up.

So how do they handle "dead ending?"  It sounded like it was more than just hanging the last "loop" of wire on the last tower or pylon.  What's special about it, if anything?

My guess woud be that they can't just tie the last electrified loop to a pylon, they have to have another pylon beyond that with unelectrified lines to keep the tension on the last powered lines.

Essentially a giant bolt on lug that's crimped to the end. It dropped down from the tower and onto the buss bar.
