Title: Stuff White People Like
Post by: roo_ster on February 28, 2008, 06:49:55 PM
I read cassandrasdaddy use the term "Mighty white of you" in a sarcastic manner and it stuck in my head unitl...I found this site:
http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/

Here is a recent post:

#76 Bottles of Water

Water seems like a fairly simple concept. You turn on the tap, put glass underneath, and drink. Sadly, it is not this simple for white people.

On the whole, they are unable to put a glass under a tap and just drink. In fact, this is such a strange concept that the city of New York had to launch a rather large PR campaign to show white people that it was possible to actually drink the water that comes out of the tap!

Up until this point, white people were consuming most of their water in the form of expensive bottles like Fiji, Aquafina and Dasanai. To this day, many white people continue to get their water in this fashion, and it is important to be aware about how your choice of water can say a lot about who you are.

Logically, you would assume that drinking the most expensive premium bottled water (Fiji and Voss) would be enough to show the world that you are too good for tap water. And a few years ago, you would have been right. But lately, advanced white people have been getting very upset about all of the waste that comes with drinking 15-20 bottles per week.

The leading edge of white people have started to use sturdier, refillable bottles. But do not assume this is from the tap. Most white people need to run their water through some sort of filter (Brita or PUR) before they put it into their bottle. This allows them to feel good about using a refillable bottle, but it also makes it more complicated, which they also like.

Previously, the gold standard was the Nalgene bottle, however recent studies have shown the plastic can leak toxins into the water. Currently, white people on the cutting edge are really into metal bottles of water with a twist cap. It is recommended that you buy one of these as soon as possible.

Having one will give you precious leverage over any white person who is drinking from a plastic bottle. Oh bottled water? really? I mean its cool, but I kind of thought you cared about the earth. If you see someone drinking a Fiji water, you do have the opportunity to go in for the kill. Do you know that your bottle of water has a bigger carbon footprint than me? I think they were originally going to call it aboriginal blood but that bottle was as close as they could get. You know, legally.

Again, this should only be used in extreme situations.

Following your confrontation, the white person is likely to have a metal bottle just like yours. If this happens, there will be an implicit pact whereby they will do favors for you provided you do not tell everyone they got their bottle after you.

Go see entry #75, "Threatening to Move to Canada:"

Quote
Within white culture, it is agreed upon that if Canada had better weather it would be a perfect place.

Being aware that this information can be used quite easily to gain the trust of white people. Whenever they say, Im moving to Canada, you must immediately respond with I have relatives in Canada.

They will then expect you to tell them about how Canada has a perfect healthcare system, legalized everything, and no crime. Though not true, it will reassure them that they are making the right choice by saying they want to move there.

Who gives a crap.

I drink bevvies out of aluminium canz, and toss them in the back yard for the local outdoorsmen to scavenge... Of course, since I've moved to the 'burbs, has resulted in a problem with one of my neighbors... This gentulman, who we will call Ul Teg, seems to have a problem with a backyard recycling area...

After filling the coffee pot with water from the tap, I noticed the water was pink and smelled funny.  I poured it out, waited a little while, and refilled it with water from the same tap that was less pink and less funny smelling.  I have no idea what it was.  The coffee tasted alright.  smiley

If I'm thirsty enough, I have no compunctions about drinking from a hose (and I often prefer it that way, anyway).

However, I do filter my tap water, mostly because it tastes like crap.  That, and I came from a town that would periodically have the sewer back up into the water supply.  Although a filter isn't nearly as good as boiling for that, it's better than nothing (and you don't always find out about those sewer problems in time).  undecided

I use a Brita pitcher, because it tastes better after the chlorammonia or whatever it is they use now is knocked down.

I didn't think wanting to drink water that was just WATER, which is what a charcoal filter does, had any racial connotation.

Historically speaking anyways. Between the coal industry and the railroad industry Scranton was quite the hub. Here in CT we have Rockville, also a Victorian era hub, of textiles. One of the best sites in the world for water powered mills. Present day Rockville and present day Scranton share a lot of the same qualities although Scranton is quite a bit larger. It was quite sobering(?) seeing things like school buildings that were old 30+ years ago still there and still in use. I LOVE the friggin' radio tower on the Scranton Times building. No matter which way you enter that valley it presents quite the picture.  laugh

I am too cheap to drink only bottled water.  Cheesy  But I guess my refrigerator has a filter for the water tap on it so I can't claim I drink from the tap.

Growing up, we had good well water.  I work in a chemical plant now and we have Ozarka supplying water bottles.  I don't drink the tap water at work.  The little potable water tank outside is not much to look at.

What kind of white people has that author been hanging around?  It is funny, but I am almost irritated how much of it doesn't seem to apply to me.  Smiley  A few are familiar.  I guess the author has been hanging around liberal urban types and not small town country boys.

Concerts:  Rush and Yes really don't play dance music.  I guess I have seen a lot of head bangers at some concerts.  Does that show the author limited scope of music?

But most city water is filthy. All kinds of nasty stuff in it.

I've drunk water out of mountain creeks, beaver ponds, and glacial rivers and never got sick from it.  We're on a well now, and the water has a bit of sodium in it among other things.  I use it for coffee, but it isn't all that good to just drink it straight unless you are awfully thirsty.

The town where we lived previously gets its city water from the bottom of an old coal mine, which has a bunch of equipment rusting away in it.  shocked

Yeah, I remember a couple of outbreaks when I was younger... in that case I'll take bottled water. I just find it funny that there are those who have to carry around all day a bottle with water... never more than two inches from their hand... it's like a socially acceptable baby bottle for adults.

Our municipal water supplier sends out regular notices to take lead precautions with the water.  I don't have time to run the tap for a couple minutes before drinking, and I get enough lead exposure through shooting and related activities.

I'd rather get my water from a river, but it's a bit of a drive to the right one.  I settle for bottled.

But them I recently saw a couple comments referring as Jews as something other than white people, so I dunno if I count anyway.

Our city water in Minneapolis is actually pretty good; the city installed a nice top of the line filtration system a few years ago. I laugh when I see people spending megabucks on bottled water here; for some reason they think city water is bad. I have seen blind taste tests where the city water gets picked over the expensive bottled water. We still use a faucet filter, and put the filtered water in the fridge.

One nice thing about living in the northern part of the US is that the water is pretty cold when it comes out of the tap, especially in the winter. I think that may help with the taste.

Most of the grocery stores and Walmarts in Montana have self-serve RO machines that you can refill your water jugs.  Usually about 33 cents a gallon.

The one nice thing about Colorado was the plentiful supply of good water.  Around here water is a luxury and good water even more so.

Good lord. They took those out of stores in Florida where I grew up yeaaaars ago, after an expose that the nozzles were breeding grounds for black mold and mildew, and they never cleaned them out.

Our water is very hard and tastes like dirt.  A couple years ago I did the Culligan thing - softener and RO.  No more crusty faucets, no more funky ice, and no more coffee that tastes like it's been filtered through a used jock strap.

Yeah, the private elementary school I went to in the 80's was like that. New concept crap. "open" classrooms, and it wasn't a library, it was a media center.  rolleyes

Since then, the classrooms have been walled off, soundproofed, and the library is a library.

I think lots of you are missing the point. The "Stuff White People Like" blog is some white guy skewering himself and his fellow "enlightened whites". It's not about making fun of white people in general.

Quote from: Christian Lander, "Stuff White People Like" interview
Still, Lander is less concerned with cross-ethnic and racial relations than he is with how whites treat each other. As a onetime graduate student in the Midwest, he got tired of coastal condescension of the fly-over states and the glib assumption that "red staters are evil and stupid."

"Too many white people don't like to be reminded that they're white. They like to think that white people are those evil corporate right-wingers or the uneducated masses who vote the wrong way. But 'enlightened whites' are white people too and have just as much of a group mentality as they think the red staters have."

That's great, I have been saying that for years.  What's even funny is that most immigrants to the US from Africa are WHITE.  so the only "real" african-americans are mostly white.  It's not to stop thinking it's funny, in fact the first step is the opposite.  We need to realize that we are in fact different, and we do have different cultures and backgrounds, but that there isn't anything wrong with that.  I have to say even though they are usually very funny and even correct, I can't stand most "black" comedians, simply because it is such an unfair hypocrisy, that EVERY one of their acts is about how dumb white people are, and white people WILL get stabbed for talking about other races.  Carlos Mencia has it right, either everyone is fair game, or no one is.  I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable talking about humorous observations about "black" culture, and that just isn't fair, because my observations can be just as funny as theirs.

Ditto. I went to Andersonville, Georgia with a friend a few years ago to visit the site of the infamous Civil War prison camp and the National POW museum. If you don't know much about it, read up a little about the beyond-appalling conditions that Union soldiers were held in there. The camp was built with a creek running through it, but the Confederate encampment was upstream and both Union and Confederate soldiers used the stream as drinking water source, washroom, and toilet. A filthier setup probably couldn't have been designed. Thousands died because of it. You'll read of a thunderstorm in early 1865 (IIRC) and a lightning strike during it that opened a freshwater spring just inside the prison walls, uphill from the creek. The prisoners named it Providence Spring, and it saved many lives in the last days of the camp's existence. The spring still flows, and a stone house was built over it about a hundred years ago. The water flows into a basin, out the side and down to join that nearby creek.

The day we visited, a blistering hot Dog-Days-of-August-in-South-Georgia Tuesday, and after walking all over the prison site for a couple of hours, we found that the US Park Service has posted signs in front of and inside the stone house that read, "WARNING! This Water Is Not Fit For Human Consumption!" After due consideration of just why it isn't (because the government hasn't added anything to it, of course) we drank long and deep of the cold, clear water.

Bar none, it was the best water I've ever tasted.

So...is there anything funny about the "gun culture"?

Oh, yeah.

Such deserves a thread of its own.

No.  Gun people are always serious.  They are not fanatical.  They do not complain about unrealistic ballistics in movies.  They are always right.  Every shoot is a good shoot, unless it was a bad person that did it.  Some people need killing.  From my cold dead hands.  Get off my lawn.
