Title: Chin Up!
Post by: Doggy Daddy on January 11, 2013, 10:55:59 PM
I'd like this to be a thread we can go to when we need to read about the things that are going our way.  To that end, I hope that whenever you run across a positive link, you share it here.  I'm okay with there also being a thread dedicated to whatever the link is, but I'd still like to see it copied here for a convenient place to go for good news.

I'm putting it in Politics because I'm hopeful that some of the good news will be political in nature.  And in keeping with the desire to make this a morale-lifting thread, I'd humbly request that in here if you don't have something good to say, you don't say anything.

I'll start with a couple I like:

Lewis County Sheriff’s Office overwhelmed with concealed pistol license seekers
http://www.lewiscountysirens.com/?p=16533 (http://www.lewiscountysirens.com/?p=16533)
"Sheriff Steve Mansfield said he sees the increase in requests as a reaction where more people just want to be more in control of their own security and safety."

The Southern States PBA official stand on gun control in America
http://www.sspba.org/gen/articles/The_Southern_States_PBA_official_stand_on_gun_control_in_America_323.jsp (http://www.sspba.org/gen/articles/The_Southern_States_PBA_official_stand_on_gun_control_in_America_323.jsp)
"As president of Southern States PBA, a professional law enforcement association with over 30,000 members from federal, state, county and municipal agencies, I would like to  express our support for the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution and for law abiding citizens to purchase and own firearms."

"And far from worrying about repercussions for doing this, Peyman sees the gun control push as a sign of weakness that will crumble in the face of real opposition: 'Just a few of us have to be willing to stand up to political opposition putting our people at risk. The other side will back down.'”

Missteps and setbacks impacting gun ban momentum as gun owners start to advance

"Gun owners, horrified and then outraged by a full court press from the government, the “Authorized Journalist” media and citizen disarmament advocacy groups, are beginning to push back in a coordinated effort, and are sensing that their enemies, over-confident and unrestrained, have let their reach exceed reality, and revealed an end game that’s beyond their grasp."

The psychological and public health benefits of gun ownership

"As Thomas Jefferson wrote to his nephew Peter Carr in 1785, 'A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the Body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind . . . '"

Montana Shooting Sports Association: Open Letter: No New Gun Laws
http://oathkeepers.org/oath/2013/01/05/montana-shooting-sports-association-open-letter-no-new-gun-laws/ (http://oathkeepers.org/oath/2013/01/05/montana-shooting-sports-association-open-letter-no-new-gun-laws/)
"Conclusion. Since Montana law enforcement personnel are unlikely to enforce any such restrictions, the effect of passage of such restrictions would ultimately be for federal officers to come to Montana to enforce them.  Because most Montanans will simply not comply with any new federal restraints on a right they have reserved specifically from government interference, the obvious result would be armed conflict between Montanans and federal enforcers.  (I offer this not as a threat or a challenge, but simply as an observation.)
I certainly hope you would not set Montana on the path to an armed conflict with federal enforcers by aiding or supporting passage of any new federal restrictions.  That would not be in the best interest of your constituents.
Instead, if you feel compelled to pass some actually corrective legislation in response to the media hysteria over the Connecticut shooting, I highly recommend that you get rid of those dangerous and illusory “gun free zones.”
Very sincerely,
/s/
Gary Marbut, President
Montana Shooting Sports Association"

Reminds me of the high school I went to in Ohio.  Rural, about the same size even.  The point about the custodians having the best knowledge of the school is right on.  I knew ways into and passageways through my school that very few other students knew and probably next to no outsiders knew about.

Study finds 40% of high school and college students "definitely plan" on owning firearms. Another 20% on top of that are "contemplating" it. The percentages don't really change from HS to college.

Where do they get that figure? They must be looking at states that require ownership permits. Or maybe they're counting first-time CCWs as first-time gun buyers.

It would be mind-blowing, if it were true.  25% of recent sales being to first-time gun owners does not correlate to gun ownership rising by 25%

Easy example: there are 10 gun owners.  3 of them went and bought a new gun last month.  Also, one person who never owned a gun bought one.  25% of sales were to first-time gun owners, and now there are 11 instead of 10

Edited to correct "There are now 11 instead of 12"

"On a recent evening at Bull's Head Tavern in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, twentysomething revelers balanced IPAs in one hand, and toy firearms — green handled or blaze orange — in the other. Antelope and deer loped across an HD screen, and players took turns drunkenly firing off shots at them. This was Big Buck Hunter, an arcade shooting game that has gained irony-fueled popularity across New York. About 130 bars in the city claim to offer it, and last November one East Village dive bar hosted a Big Buck Hunter world championship."

http://www.jocosheriff.org/index.aspx?page=36&recordid=93&returnURL=%2findex.aspx

It's very uplifting to me to see so many Sheriffs make a stand against enforcing gun control laws. I can't remember any past gun control pushes that had so many LEOs at the Sheriff level (versus deputies, beat cops, etc) speaking out against gun control. Apparently whatever the national Sheriffs association is called is in favor of most of Obama's gun control measures, so it does my heart good to see so many of these elected Law Enforcement officials countering that and speaking out.

Pro-gun article by a left-winger. Note that it was written pre-Sandy Hook. I didn't read down into the comments to see what his reaction was to Obama going for a gun grab. Other than the pre-second term sticking up for Obama, I was pleasantly surprised to see him give a logical argument against an AWB.

This part I have a question about:
Quote
automatic weapons (those that fire more than one bullet with each pull of the trigger) are already illegal for the average citizen to own. They are heavily regulated by the federal government, registered with the ATF and very difficult to obtain licenses for.

What really stands in the way of the "average citizen" who wants to own an automatic weapon? Isn't it mostly a question of money, and having a very clean record?

My group moved into the same building as the rest of our company's workers in this area.  While I was in our kitchen getting some coffee the other day, the TV was blaring CNN and the reporter was talking about some gun control topic.

The only other person in the kitchen, a large, middle aged black man, commented that new laws weren't going to do a damn thing because they only take guns from the folks who are following the law to begin with.  The criminals weren't going to be affected.  Yeah, we say it all the time here, but this was a total stranger talking to another total stranger in a white collar office building in liberal Northern VA. :D

More than half of Colorado's elected sheriffs are planning to mount a legal challenge to the state's sweeping new gun restrictions.

The Denver Post reports that 37 of the state's 62 sheriffs will sue to overturn laws passed in March that set limits on ammunition magazines and expand background checks for firearms.

Awesome.
I have a yahoo email so when I go there to check it I scan the newsfeed. When the subject is guns I will read the article and then check the comments.

Every article I have checked has had most of the pro gun comments upvoted 8 or 10  or 12 or more to 1 over downvotes. Sometimes as high as 20-1.

Is Yahoo a particularly conservative/libertarianish site or is that the real ratio of viewpoints?

I know that almost anyone from almost any country can have a Yahoo account so I'm not sure that ratio holds perfectly for the US but it is very suggestive. And if that is an accurate representation of a large part of the world's populace than that means we have many allies out there.

Quote
A new proposed committee bill in the Florida Legislature would put an end to treating young students like violent offenders. A state House education proposal would prohibit school disciplinary action for the following:

Brandishing a partially consumed pastry or other food item to simulate a firearm or weapon
Possessing a toy firearm or weapon that is two inches or less in overall length
Possessing a toy firearm or weapon made of plastic snap-together building blocks
