Supposably, Dictionary.com is getting Updates
« on: March 12, 2021, 05:30:00 PM »
Dictionary.com is updating their online dictionary. An example:

Quote
"supposably," which is an adverb meaning "as may be assumed, imagined, or supposed," is one of the 600 words we just added to http://Dictionary.com.

Maybe it's just me but the English language seems to support both "supposedly" (something that is supposed) versus "supposably" (able to be supposed). While my education tells me that the former is correct and the latter is not, when it comes to the sometimes arbitrary word-building of our Anglo-Saxon language conventions, either may be correct.

I'm not necessarily against adding new words or slang - that's part of changing language. For me though, "supposably" has always been wrong. Could be an age and/or regional thing.

Wouldn't that be "supposable"? That's a perfectly cromulent word. ;)  I don't think adding a 'y' is right

It's been knocking around a while, not in my vocabulary though.

Seeing it spelled out, it just looks wrong.
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

"Supposably" is a misspelling of "supposedly" and has no place in a dictionary.

This is why I ignore dictionary.com. If/when I need an on-line dictionary I usually start with Merriam-Webster, and then I may also check the Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries. Here at my desk, I have seven (7) dead trees thesauri (all the proper, two-part Roget's style) and four (4) English language dictionaries. I don't need dictionary.com.

What he said.

The English language evolves. The meaning of words and their usage changes over time but changing dictionarys to include common mispronunciations of common words is just stupid.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Are they going to redefine "downfall," so it means "downside;" or "tact" to mean "tack"?

Let me know when they add "rediculous."

Stretching things a bit, you could say it's related to being smelly, as in "redolent."

What I have always wondered is, if an unhappy employee is "disgruntled," why do we never hear about all the "gruntled" employees?

Disunirregardess of the above examples, I hate when breech, broach, and breach get mixed up in text, as in, "Don't you just love her beautiful breech?"

Waiting for racism to be "Something only white people do"

I don't think it will happen. "Racism" will be fading from the scene soon. It will be replaced with the up and coming "white supremacy" meme since it is becoming evident that all races have people in them who are racist.

It's like when they changed "global warming" to "climate change" because global warming was too narrowly focused, confining their agenda. Conversely, racism is becoming too widely applicable to single out from whom to collect reparations, to take their jobs, to push aside to allow less qualified individuals to attend higher education or take positions of authority or importance simply because they are not white, etc., etc., etc. (Only the person with the highest qualifications, etc., should advance to any given position regardless of color.)

As for me, I'm neither racist nor do I claim to be of a supreme or superior color. Like numbers, words have meaning and value. I just do the math.

Irregardless, since "racist" is losing its potency due to overuse, they are now moving to "white supremacy".  When that inevitably loses its potency in the near future, what will be the next terrible accusation?  (or will people just not care anymore?)
