But, does your desktop publishing software still work?  How about your database software?  How about Firefox v. 57 with the Classic Theme Restorer add-on?

It was still free, right?  I don't have any Win7 laptops left to test that.

I just did fresh W10 installs on two 2010 Dells with blank harddrives that had W7 Pro key stickers and once they hit the internet they authenticated automatically will no key input from me.

If you were already a W7 user it's not that big a jump. Some eccentricities, sure, but enough familiarity to get around without too much fuss.

You may have already seen this thread in MS Help. If not, it goes into customizing the appearance to be more Win7-like.

The one biggest issue I have had since upgrading from 7 to 10 is it wants to write protect (read only) my pictures at random times on random folders. I often have to go to properties to un-check read only. It has become a PITA at times.

Not so soft crammed 10 onto two of my tablets and my desktop computer without my permission.  I paid $75 to get it taken off one tablet and have 8.1 restored and I figured out how to restore 8.1 to the other tablet and my desktop.  Then they tried to cram Edge down my throat.  I did a system restore to get rid of Edge since it was taking over my Google search.  I don't mind them having different stuff for the highly technical folks out there, but leave my stuff the heck alone.  Not I have everything set to NOT upgrade without my actually doing it.  I couldn't stand 10 and Edge really sucked.

I'm not a techie.  Windows 98 did what I needed to do.  8.1 is a little cumbersome, but 10 was unbearable.  I want to see my stuff, right there on the screen, not hidden in some little cache I have to try to find.

Windows 8.1 was an abomination. It offers nothing that isn't available and better implemented in Windows 10.

That said, neither Windows 8.1 nor Windows 10 can be configured to look and act like XP or even Windows 7 without external help. Reference has been made to Classic Shell -- Classic Shell was a great addition to Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Unfortunately, a few "upgrades" ago Windows 10 broke Classic Shell, and the developer gave up on it. Classic Shell is no longer supported. If you can find it, I don't think it will instyall on the newest releases of Windows 10.

Classic Shell has been replaced by a "fork" called Open Shell, which picks up where Classic Shell left off (and which does run with the newest versions of Windiows 10).
