As a member of THR, I've noticed an increase in the use of "+1" posts. I don't mind it if the poster goes on to explain why they agree with the subject, or to expand upon the point, but it drives me crazy when someone's entire response is "+1." I agree with a lot that's posted on THR, but if I can't think of anything to add to the conversation I'm certainly not going to respond with "+1." Why bother having post counts at all if that's the case?

Am I going insane?

I find it annoying too. I confess, I've done it several times myself, but prefer when someone actually says something themselves instead of just posting +1. In fact, over on Bladeforums.com, posting like that it frowned upon. You have to add something relevant to the discussion, not just post in agreement. That's something I really like about Bladeforums. Maybe something similar could be implemented on THR?

There, have I added enough to this discussion to post, even though I agree with the thread starter and could have just posted +1? Tongue

The thing that really bugs me is that I never thought that I would have to use math after high school. I refuse to take off my shoes to keep up with the +1's!!!

I'll tell you what bugs me. I posted an old liberals vs republicans vs rednecks joke over there. It was "gun related" but it got closed and I don't have a problem with that, it wasn't really relevant to the forum and it was an old clunker anyways. HOWEVER, one poster took great offense to my picking on the "ethnic" group of rednecks. I didn't say much back along those lines but another asked this person when rednecks became an "ethnic" group. The offended poster, in very terse terms, refered us to the dictionary having, obviously, never looked up the definition themselves. Isn't there some irony in there? Makes ya just want to shake your head in disbelief or just LOL...

Actually I believe the whole thing started back in the mid '90s via AOL. Once AOL started getting lots of users, it became common in the AOL forums that when one poster requested something, other dipwads would chime in with "me too." it became common to have a thread with a couple of substantive posts, and a bajillion other posts that simply said "me too."

Around 1995, when AOL "merged" with the Internet and Usenet, they made the link between AOL "newsgroups" and the real newsgroups transparent, so the Usenet was flooded with AOLers posting their "me too" requests. I recall the backlash being pretty comical, especially when the AOLer response to someone on Usenet cussing at them was, "I'm reporting you to the Moderator for TOS!"

What really, really annoys me is when someone quotes an entire post only to add a "+1" under it.

Yeah, cool, thanks for making me scroll through a lengthy post that I've already read just so you can give your two symbols' worth of kudos. No, really, that's awesome. Far better than actually typing something like "I agree with what El Tejon said."

Honestly, I think the reason that you see a lot of people doing the "+1" posts over on THR without adding anything to it is related to the member "ranking" system.

Here on APS, everyone, whether they have posted once or thousands of times is listed as a "Member" on their profile. On THR, the cheap and easy way to get your "Senior Member" status is to go into every other thread and post a quick "+1" with no other comment. Of course the people who see this as their way to respectability fail to see that having "Senior Member" by your name is pretty silly if you haven't been contributing at all to the forum but, for some, that is the way they want to do things.

Yes lots of things annoy me, seem like something else gets added to the list, but one thing that will never annoy me is an attractive woman with a low scoop collar showing off lots of cleveage.
