Per kitco.com, silver spot is $10.22, up $0.40 from yesterday, which is a pretty good move.  They're selling at $10.05, so they're giving a pretty good introductory deal.  Silver is now moving up from a week-long correction of profit-taking.

A half-bag weighs--it felt like, Monday--around 30 pounds.

A lot of local coin shops have half-bags and bags.  ($500 face; $1,000 face).  And, of course, they sell smaller quantities.

I usually use Tulving, in my experience they are the dealer to beat.  Still, on large purchases you should always check around and see if there's a better deal available.  Tulving's prices include shipping and insurance, spot silver when this was posted was $10.21/ounce and they were charging $10.30/ounce delivered.

IMO FWIW circulated pre-1964 silver US coins (aka junk silver) are better for monetary insurance than bars or rounds,  YMMV of course.

90% Silver Coin Bags

$1,000 Face Value-715 ozs Of Pure Silver

Current Price-$7,359  For 715 Ozs. Of Pure Silver
That's $10.30  Per Oz. Of Pure Silver
Minimum order is 1 Bag. All Silver Shipped Via UPS.

Many people want to own pre 1964 silver coins.  This allows a person to have silver in very small denominations.  Each $1,000 face value bag contains approximately 715 ounces of pure silver. Each bag is a solid bag (same denomination) of either silver dimes or silver quarters in circulated condition minted 1964 or before.

A good analysis of what's going on and what the potential might be.  Long, but worth the read.

Silver is a commodity like anything else, it goes up and down.  Let me be the first to say however, that death for our politicians based on inflation might be a little extreme.  I saw that aluminium is at a 15 or 16 year high currently.  They mention that it's because of a couple smelting plants closing in the UK, I suspect however it has to do with the magical properties of foil hats.

Art,

Dross' article was thought provoking.

I read somewhere 20 years ago that buying selected silver mining shares offers the best chance for high leverage profits.

What do you think?

Mining shares, whether gold or silver, have always moved faster than the metals themselves.  They tend to increase more in percentage than the metals.

Small-company shares xcan go from $1 to $10 almost overnight, while gold or silver might only move a few percentage points.

Timing is the problem.  It's probably too late, at the moment, unless some company(s) you've been following is just now finding a big strike.

The large companies (Newmont, et al) will work poorer strata when prices rise, to keep their income constant.  Prices drop, they work the richer seams.  The stock prices don't tend to move as dramatically.
