Having issues with CD-RW drive

HELP!  I've got an internal CD-RW drive on my home PC.  Recently, it's started acting weird.  It won't recognize that it has a blank CD-R in it, so I can't record anything.  Which is an issue, as we use the burner a lot for photos from the digital cameras.  Anyways, it still recognizes musical CD's, and plays them just fine.  It works fine with CD software as well.  Any clues, or am I stuck trying the help line, God forbid?

control panel, system, hardware tab, device manager, dvd/cd rom drives, right click on the device and uninstall. Agree to everything and reboot your computer. Windows will reinstall the device. If this doesn't work reinstall the burner software that came with drive or computer. If that doesn't work, CD-R/RW are damn cheap to replace.

You do have a good anti-virus program loaded (and updated), right?
