I'm joining you, nobodyfornow.

It's not doing me any good anymore, if it ever did.

FWIW, I went to AA when I quit the first time. I hated every minute of it. angry

I'm getting there myself so I'll be checking on you gentlemen.

Best wishes and strength to all in this thread.  I have been fortunate in not having a substance issue.  Wife 2.0 did, however, and her inability or unwillingness to deal with it was the major factor in my divorcing her.  I found the local Al-Anon meetings of great help and support.  I would recommend those meetings to any family member struggling with this issue.

Guys, I think what you are doing is great.  I don't know what it's like to be that hooked on something (OK, maybe mexican food...) but I think it's a wonderful thing to take control of your life back.

No worries Laurent du Var,

Just start today.

grislyatoms- Good luck, that was the tough part for me.  Just simply saying no was tough.....You'll get there, when you are ready.

If you fall today, tomorrow is another day.

If anyone feels the need to PM me for advice/ an ear to listen, feel free.  I'm no expert, by any stretch, but today is four years, three months, and 14 days....

I'm having a thought....

Is anyone interested in a "support" forum?  There seems to be a small handful of us "special" people that might be able to use a private forum to vent to other people with similar issues.  It could be for alcohol, drugs, whatever.

The mods would be able to see it, and only members granted access would be able to see it.

I would make a sticky note indicating that it exists.  People would need to PM me for access.

Would this help people?  If it will be a waste, then I won't bother setting it up.

If you want to voice an opinion, but don't want your name attached, shoot me a PM, and I can (if you want) post your response without a name attached.

That seems to be kinda out of the scope of what APS is all about, but... what do I know about anything?

I believe I would benefit from it. I've come to trust folks here, as foolhardy as that may sound. grin

Could be interesting.
If you'd open a place just for dependency issues
we could get bigger than the Roundtable.
Hi, my name is Laurent and for 15 years I've been runnig 10 miles a week so people wouldn't think I like the juice as much as I do.
I'll stop drinking when I'll hit rock bottom and before then I'll stop occasionaly

mbs357, some things are acquired tastes. Beer, Springsteen and Dylan come to mind. Wink
Hey!  I liked Dylan and Springsteen right off the bat!  Coincidentally, my dad can stand neither, but he loves Godsmack and beer.  Go figure.

I've got 4458 days clean & sober in AA.
I've had a ton of ups and downs in that time
(12 years and change) but I don't miss booze at all.

A month ago I got into a fight with a drunk who was pointing a gun at me, that night I really felt like having Jameson and Camel unfiltered, but I talked with some sober friends instead.

Eventually, God willing, you won't miss it and you'll enjoy things you didn't know you could before.

That's a lot of days sober. Good on 'ya.

I'm not missing alcohol. Really. I never thought I could quit or that quitting would be as painless as it has been. The other night I came home from work in a really bad mood. Just a few weeks ago I would have used that as an excuse to slam some beers. Instead I slammed down four cans of Vernor's ginger ale. And I felt just as much better as if I'd slammed four beers.

I read a lot about alcoholism and talked to all sorts of addicts and AA counselors. So I knew that most addicts don't quit until they hit their bottom. I was lucky that my bottom wasn't as deep as some other people have. I know people who have lost everything like spouses or family or jobs or homes and they still haven't hit their bottoms.

Ex-MA Hole, your idea for a new forum is interesting. I wonder if there's enough addicts or recovering addicts. Time would tell.

When I was getting ready to quit, I found a really good forum for addicts at SoberRecovery.com. For every bad story, there's always someone with a story that's worse. But the people there are really supportive.

I hope people don't mind that I'm not using my real username for now. I trust the members of this forum. It's the people who might be "listening in" that I don't trust.

Off the subject of addiction, Vernor's Ginger Ale is wonderful.  I grew up drinking that at my grandma's house.

In case you haven't noticed, having two logins is a bannable offense, but you are still here.

You are ok by me, and, well, the rest of the mods.

For something like this, we will make the exception.

I would certainly visit a new forum if it were up.
