Explosion at Crane!
« on: March 22, 2006, 02:41:46 AM »
Apparently workers were destroying expired destructive devices at Crane Naval Base in Southern Indiana (south of Bloomington, Indiana) when some sort of accident transpired on March 21, 2006.

Any speculation on the cause?

The senseless destruction of military ammunition and explosives has always made me sad.  USE THEM, DON'T INCINERATE THEM!

Kirk,
I'm guessing "Hey dude, watch this." might have been involved.

Why does the Navy have a base in the middle of Indiana?

The Navy has bases in a lot of places where there isn't any water.

At one time, when I was a kid, the Navy Ship Parts Control Center in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, handled every overhaul, refit, and repair part for the entire East Coast, as well as the Gulf Coast. If it was going to go into a ship that was already in commission, it went through Mechanicsburg.

Yup, there's an ordnance center in Louisville KY where they do buildups/refurbs of the deck guns. Of course Louisville does have a river Cheesy

Where's the Navy's main reactor school? I think Idaho somewhere...

They also have a reactor research facility in Saratoga, New York.

The base at Crane is where the USN does small arms research.  Indiana is where all the guns are.Cheesy

As well, when the Chinese invade we can retreat to the woods and hills of Southern Indiana and hold out at Crane.Cheesy

Plenty of water in Indiana, but it mostly falls from the sky.

Makes it a lot easier to have reserve forces that way.

I agree. Our continued military presence in Indiana is a recipe for disaster. If those Indianians cant take care of themselves by now, then there is nothing we can do to help them.
